NGC-404 Ship Redesigns and Combat Feel Improvements

Hello Sector Commanders,

This update is focused on something very important to us: making the game easier to read, better to look at, and more satisfying to play.

Over the last few weeks, we received a lot of useful community feedback about our ships and combat presentation. We took that feedback seriously and went back to improve several visual parts of NGC-404: Fractured Sector.

Reworked Ship Designs

We have reworked our 2D ship models based on the comments and suggestions we received from the community.

The goal was not to change the identity of the ships, but to make them cleaner, stronger, and easier to understand at a glance.

The main improvements include:

  • Clearer ship silhouettes

  • Better readability between ship classes

  • Less repeated and copy-paste looking surface detail

  • More recognizable large visual features

  • Toned down lighting and shader intensity

  • Cleaner overall faction style

These changes should make each ship feel more distinct, especially when viewed during combat or at smaller zoom levels.

Final Designs for This Ship Line

This pass covers the final designs for this ship line, including:

  • Frigates

  • Destroyers

  • Light Cruisers

  • Heavy Cruisers

  • Battleships

Each class now has a stronger visual role. Smaller ships are easier to identify, while larger ships should feel heavier and more imposing on the battlefield.

Combat Presentation Rework

We also reworked several parts of the combat presentation and overall battle feel.

The main focus was to make battles feel less like icons shooting at each other and more like actual ships trading fire, taking damage, and breaking apart.

Combat improvements include:

  • Clearer weapon fire

  • More readable impacts

  • Improved combat pacing

  • Better ship movement

  • Stronger destruction feedback

  • Cleaner overall battle flow

Our goal is to make large battles easier to follow without losing the chaos and intensity of space combat.

New Combat VFX

We have also added completely new VFX for combat.

Weapon impacts now feel stronger and more varied. Shield hits, hull impacts, heavy cannon shots, explosions, and other combat effects are now easier to read and much more satisfying to watch.

We also added animated weapon barrels and moving mounts during firing. Weapons no longer feel static when they shoot. Cannons now visibly react to each shot, which gives ships more weight and makes combat feel more physical.

Together with the new impact effects, explosions, and improved feedback, battles should feel much more alive than before.

Better Readability During Battles

One of the biggest points of feedback was readability.

In a game with multiple ships, projectiles, shields, explosions, and UI elements on screen, it is very easy for combat to become visually noisy.

With this update, we focused on making important things easier to understand:

  • Which ships are firing

  • Where shots are landing

  • Which ships are taking damage

  • When a ship is being overwhelmed

  • How the battle is progressing overall

This is still work in progress, but the current version is already much clearer than before.

More Impactful Ship Destruction

We also continued improving destruction feedback.

Ships should not feel like they simply disappear when destroyed. They should feel like large machines failing under pressure.

With the latest visual changes, destruction is more readable and satisfying, helping battles feel heavier and more physical.

Built With Community Feedback

This update was heavily shaped by community comments.

Feedback about silhouettes, repeated details, shader intensity, combat readability, weapon visibility, and overall battle flow directly influenced this pass.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to comment, criticize, and point out what felt off. It genuinely helps us make the game better.

What Comes Next

Next, we will be focusing on a new economy system.

The previous version gave us a useful foundation, but it did not fully meet our expectations. We want the economy to feel more dynamic, more readable, and more connected to the rest of the game.

Our goal is to build a system where trade, production, shortages, logistics, and conflict all matter more clearly.

This will be a major area of work for us going forward.

As always, thank you for following the development of NGC-404: Fractured Sector.

This has been one of the largest systemic changes we have worked on so far. The goal was simple: make the economy feel like something that actually exists inside the game world, not just a set of numbers moving in the background. Previously, trade was mostly abstract.
