NGC-404 The Great Economy Rework

Hello Sector Commanders,

For the past four weeks, we have been rebuilding the entire economy of NGC-404: Fractured Sector.

This has been one of the largest systemic changes we have worked on so far. The goal was simple: make the economy feel like something that actually exists inside the game world, not just a set of numbers moving in the background.

Previously, trade was mostly abstract. Resources moved between planets through systems and calculations, but the player did not always feel that movement happening in the galaxy.

That has changed.

Resources now physically exist on planetary markets and must be transported by real ships. Every shipment can be delayed, intercepted, raided, or completely destroyed.Video Devlog:

Physical Trade

Planets now generate real shortages and surpluses.

When one colony needs food, fuel, industrial components, or other resources, the economy can create a trade contract. A freighter must then travel to the source planet, load the cargo, and physically deliver it to the destination.

There is no global resource pool.

There is no instant transfer between colonies.

If the freighter never arrives, neither do the resources.

This makes logistics far more important. A colony can have money and demand, but if no ship can safely deliver the goods, the shortage remains.

Fixing the Flow of Money

Physical trade also exposed a major problem with money.

Construction, maintenance, fees, and other expenses were removing cash from the economy entirely. Over time, this could drain money from the galaxy and concentrate what remained inside only a few empires.

To fix this, we introduced GalaxyBank and a unified payment system.

Money spent on fees and other economic sinks is now collected by the Bank instead of simply disappearing. The Bank can then return part of that money back into the economy through loans and activity-based payments.

Money now circulates through the galaxy instead of being permanently deleted.

This gives the economy a much stronger foundation for long-term campaigns.

Independent Traders

We have also introduced independent economic factions.

The Free Traders Guild searches for profitable trade routes, buying surplus goods from one planet and selling them where they are needed.

These traders help connect the economy, especially in areas where empires are not handling logistics efficiently on their own.

They are not just background modifiers. Their ships physically travel through the galaxy and can be attacked, delayed, or destroyed like any other vessel.

Smugglers

Smugglers now appear when normal trade cannot cover critical shortages.

If an isolated or struggling colony desperately needs goods, smugglers may step in with emergency deliveries. They can keep a colony alive when legal trade fails, but relying on them comes with an economic cost.

This adds another layer to the economy. Shortages do not simply appear as numbers on a screen. They can attract dangerous, unofficial, and expensive solutions.

Reclaimers

The newest addition is the Reclaimer fleet.

Reclaimers search for factions that cant produce their own fleet. They deliver recovered ships in damaged condition, together with a basic set of equipment needed to deploy them.

You can even see the transported hull attached directly to the Reclaimer vessel.

If the carrier is destroyed, there is a chance that the ship it was transporting can be recovered from the wreck.

This creates a new way for damaged and recovered ships to enter the economy, while also making these transports valuable targets.

Why This Matters

The new economy is built around physical consequences.

Resources are produced, stored, bought, sold, and transported through the galaxy. Trade ships matter. Shortages matter. Logistics matter.

Disrupting transport routes can now affect entire colonies. Destroying or intercepting cargo ships can delay construction, worsen shortages, and create new opportunities for traders, smugglers, or hostile factions.

The economy is no longer just a background system. It is becoming part of the playable world.

What Comes Next

The foundation of the new economy is now in place, but there is still a lot of work ahead.

Next, we will focus on:

  • Balancing prices, production, and shortages

  • Improving economy UI and presentation

  • Testing long-term stability

  • Expanding multiplayer testing

  • Making trade routes easier to understand at a glance

This rework is a major step toward making the galaxy feel more alive, reactive, and connected.

As always, thank you for following the development of NGC-404: Fractured Sector.
