DevLog #3: Skill XP - quality of life

Sometimes, changes in a game are not made to fix bugs or to add new features. Sometimes, a change is simply made to show the player information that was already there, but not shown or, like in this case, in an inconvenient spot.

You might know that in RUTHLESS:1 using your Mech's Skills grant you Skill XP, which will grant you Skill upgrades once you earn enough. This is currently only displayed as a progress bar in the upgrade menu, but with the upcoming version 0.5.0, this info becomes available in your general HUD. Take a look at this image:

In this screenshot, you can see all the Skill XP of the Skills your Mech has equipped. The small green bars on the left side of the Skill's icons are always visible; once you hover over a Skill icon, it's tooltip becomes visible. This tooltip shows the current level of the Skill, as well as the exact percentage (rounded down to the next full number) of XP required for the next level-up.

All in all, this might not seem like a big thing and granted, it really isn't, but it serves an important purpose: preserving game flow, something that really only gets noticed when it's broken. Can't have that, can we?

This is it for now.

Greetings from Berlin,

Alex

For me, it was obvious that the style needed to highlight the colorful side of the game, not the dark side. Keeping in mind what I posted last week (detailing on Mechs), I had to…Game update1 Oct 2026Version 0.5.1 is now liveVersion 0.5.1 is now live and ready to be downloaded. It features two quality of life improvements and a handful of bugfixes related to Skills. Also, a little earlier than originally planned, the demo version for Steam is now available. For example, the three start Mechs (Basher, Tazer and Spectre) all are eligible for upgrades once they reach level 3-5 and all of them can be upgraded to one of two variants, granting bonusses in different stats, as well as new designs.…
