DevLog #7: Visual Mech Upgrades

In case you have played a few hours of RUTHLESS:1, you may have noticed that some Mechs in your squad can be upgraded once they reach a certain Tier and Level. For example, the three start Mechs (Basher, Tazer and Spectre) all are eligible for upgrades once they reach level 3-5 and all of them can be upgraded to one of two variants, granting bonusses in different stats, as well as new designs.

But have you also noticed, that not only specifically upgrading a Mech changes its design? All Mechs automatically receive visual changes when reaching certain Tiers. Some Mechs get new visual components for every Tier up (like Basher, Tazer, Spectre) and some, mainly smaller mechs, get new components every second or third Tier up (like Beetle, Crawler).

I imagine that this is a feature that flew under the radar for quite a few players, so I wanted to share some details here and highlight it with an example. Let's take a look at the Blocker.

At Tier 1, it starts quite bare, without any accessory.

By Tier 5, some progress is already noticable. The Blocker now wields some spikes, blades and five cooling ribs at the front. Cooling ribs are a visual upgrade many Mechs receive in lower tiers.

At Tier X, it features its full visual prowess with hammers at its "elbows", an extended upper section and light effects. Upon reaching Tier X, every Mech gets these light effects, representing its own class. That's why the Blocker, as an Aegis class Mech, receives pink lights.

I put a lot of effort into this feature, so I wanted to bring it a little closer to you and hope you have fun discovering all the different visuals.

This is it for now.

Greetings from Berlin,

Alex

P.S.: Please excuse the mild delay of this DevLog. Yesterday was just a little to busy.

Community9 Oct 2026DevLog #8: Putting on some shadesIn DevLog #6, roughly a month ago, I announced that I would try out a slighty changed visual style for RUTHLESS:1, and bar some very frustrating moments trying to set up a new shader, I am quite happy with the results. For me, it was obvious that the style needed to highlight the colorful side of the game, not the dark side.
