DevLog #4: Removing eyesores + announcing version 0.5.0

At some point in the past, I had to admit something to myself. During the development of RUTHLESS:1, I cut corners, and not just once. I released features that were not really usable, did not polish the levels as much as I could have, and worst of all, I used AI to create a handful of assets. In the end, only two made it into the game, at places where they even were completely unnecessary and nobody probably ever spotted them. But they were there and that annoyed me.

One other asset, however, was in a much more prominent spot. The main shop image, the blue glowing Basher mech was a screenshot taken from the engine and modified with AI. It became apparent to me, that this is something that leaves a bad first impression and greatly drags down the perceived quality of game. For this, I want to apologize and all in-game AI assets will be gone in version 0.5.0, the shop image will be gone by the time this DevLog is released, leaving only the previously released news articles of RUTHLESS:1 with that eyesore.

Also, in June, I announced the release of version 0.5.0 for August 2026. This time, I will not push the update further away. With the first paragraph in mind, I want future updates to have a quality as high as possible and I want to put more work into chapter four, before I release it. This is why I will postpone the release of the next chapter to version 0.6.0. That said, version 0.5.0 will be released on August 28.

It will fix a lot of the issues that were brought to my attention, improve the already existing levels and add a small amount of new Skills for your mechs. An extensive list of changes will be posted when the update arrives.

This is it for now.

Greetings from Berlin,

Alex

Community9 Oct 2026DevLog #8: Putting on some shadesIn DevLog #6, roughly a month ago, I announced that I would try out a slighty changed visual style for RUTHLESS:1, and bar some very frustrating moments trying to set up a new shader, I am quite happy with the results. For me, it was obvious that the style needed to highlight the colorful side of the game, not the dark side. Keeping in mind what I posted last week (detailing on Mechs), I had to…Game update1 Oct 2026Version 0.5.1 is now liveVersion 0.5.1 is now live and ready to be downloaded. It features two quality of life improvements and a handful of bugfixes related to Skills. Also, a little earlier than originally planned, the demo version for Steam is now available. Improvements: · added indicator for upgradable Mechs in lower left ui (a green star marks an upgradable Mech) · added indicator for upgradable Skills in lower r…Community26 Sep 2026DevLog #7: Visual Mech UpgradesIn case you have played a few hours of RUTHLESS:1, you may have noticed that some Mechs in your squad can be upgraded once they reach a certain Tier and Level. For example, the three start Mechs (Basher, Tazer and Spectre) all are eligible for upgrades once they reach level 3-5 and all of them can be upgraded to one of two variants, granting bonusses in different stats, as well as new designs.…
