Bilge Rats - playtest build 2026-08-24

Everything below came out of the last playtest. Thank you - the logs were as useful as the reports.

The job board (the big one)

- The board now shows the SAME jobs to everybody, on every day. Previously guests could see a different board
entirely, which is why accepting a job so often did nothing.
- Joining a crew part-way through a run now gives you the crew's real board and any jobs they have already taken.
Before, a late joiner got their own private board - sometimes even the day-one tutorial jobs.
- Jobs out at sea now bind properly instead of silently failing to place.
- The notice board has its papers back, one per job, and they come down as jobs are taken.

Crew and multiplayer

- Player names now float above your crewmates, using their Steam name, fading with distance and hidden behind
walls. Never over your own head.
- Hosting from the Load Game screen works. It used to silently not host at all.
- A brand-new save no longer inherits a previous run's "doomed" state.
- Two players can no longer climb into the same tavern bed.
- You no longer hear a sleeping crewmate's footsteps.
- The Captain's Quarters now seals voice from the deck.
- Joining a friend lists one entry per crew, rather than one per person.

The day

- The end-of-day summary card lists the day's hauls again - for everyone, not just the host.
- Starting a fresh run can no longer show you the previous run's takings.

Sailing and the sea

- A storm no longer overrules the helm. You can hold a heading through one.
- A storm no longer cuts you to a crawl - you can still make headway.
- The sea no longer lurches when a storm arrives.
- Sharks are faster, see further, and commit to an attack. You can no longer simply swim in a straight line and
escape one.
- Fixed schools of fish sitting frozen on the surface out at sea.

Ship and world

- The ship comes back to her mooring properly after sinking.
- Items thrown onto the deck now settle and stow instead of sliding off when you sail.
- Job rewards no longer sit inside the deck.
- You can't walk through the back of the tavern stairs, or through the hub's notice boards.
- Emberhook's floating rocks and the palm through the roof are fixed.
- The Fouled Cable wreck now sends up a distress flare, so it can be found in fog.
- The cartographer's flag flies properly.

Interface and audio

- Compass letters are legible, and the compass is bigger.
- Warding Fires prompts now show which symbol you are lighting.
- Push-to-talk works, and respects the toggle.
- The microphone list no longer reports a device you do not have.
- Dying underwater no longer leaves you muffled for the rest of the session.
- Several NPCs who ignored you when spoken to now answer.
- Fixed the main menu stacking screens on top of each other when clicking quickly.

Known and being worked on:
the ship occasionally launching near a shore, and being knocked into the air on
deck. Both now write a diagnostic line - if either happens, please send your `Player.log` before closing the
game (`AppData/LocalLow/LEAL Games/Bilge Rats/Player.log`, overwritten on next launch).
