How steep is a painted dome?

Public release is still December. Fold angle now sets the rim of a painted dome or dish, and a solve that loses the graphics card finishes on the CPU instead of stopping.

How steep is a painted dome?

Fill a convex or concave hint out to the edge of the shape. Fold angle is how steep that rim stands. Outline blur rounds the fill before the rim is taken, so the lip follows a smoother curve.

In front stays edge-on. Fold angle does not apply there. Smoothness will not round a painted dish: that interior is already the smoothest fill of its rim.

The same controls are --fold and --boundary-blur on the command line. totallynormalmapper.com/docs/settings

When the graphics card drops out

A solve that loses the GPU finishes on the CPU instead of stopping with an error. The status bar says CPU, and Solve detail says the device was lost. The next solve tries the GPU again. If that one dies too, the rest of the session stays on the CPU. Reload to try the graphics card again.

When the window goes blank

The editor catches the error instead of leaving an empty page. Copy the text before you reload; the packaged build has no console.

On the desktop build the same text is a file. Help > About names the folder and can copy its path. On Windows that folder is:

 %LOCALAPPDATA%\\com.goathollowgames.totallynormalmapper\\logs

Send last-crash.txt. It is always the newest report. A process that dies before the editor can catch the error leaves no file. The same steps are at totallynormalmapper.com/docs/troubleshooting.

Lighting a zoomed-in sprite

Dragging a light used to shade the whole document, so a large sprite went soft even when you were looking at a corner. The preview now lights the visible pane. Zoom in and the drag stays sharp. Zoomed out, a huge sprite may still draft at a lower resolution.

Notices such as live updating switching off stay pinned to the top of the viewport. Zooming and scrolling the artwork does not move them.

Import and layers

  • Replace the open sprite stays checked when you have assigned artwork rows, because those rows already rebuild the scene. Uncheck it, and Skip every artwork row, to pull hints onto a sprite you already have.
  • Each layer keeps its own solve. Selecting another layer no longer stamps the previous result onto it.

For testers

If the app is already in your library, Steam will offer this build. The About dialog should read 1.3.2.

This is not a freeze. More will land before the public build.

The knight sprite is from rodrigodmoreira/nmap-generation and is used under the MIT License.

This post covers two builds: 1.6.0 rebuilt Split and started a native Linux build, and 1.6.1 puts the batch tool on the graphics card and gives the Linux editor one to solve on.
