Quantum Loop Demo Version 4

Just shipping a relatively small update with some slight polish and fixing a couple pretty major bugs.

This includes fixing the unplayable hitching that was coming up about 5-10 minutes of (game world) time into runs. As part of this, you should also get significantly better performance as more asteroids spawn, with my personal stress-testing keeping to a more consistent ~70 FPS where it was previously closer to 40 with pretty bad hitching.

Also greatly expanded button prompts both for keyboard and gamepad controls. Keyboard button prompts are much nicer aesthetically and more readable, and prompts now exist for joystick and d-pad directions.

Other than that, highlight bug fixes include fixing looping sounds not responding to the volume slider, and the astronaut not spinning around the spaceship as they're supposed to. See the changelog below for the full list of bug-fixes and improved polish. (Please note that Polish localisation is not currently available)

Note that this is the 3rd shipped version of the demo, but Version 4 by my version numbers for the demo. The first released version was labelled as DemoVersion2 in the pause menu, and the version this update replaces was labelled as DemoVersion3. Oops.

ALSO: I’ve had one player say they had the game crashing to the desktop with no error or anything, which I haven’t been able to replicate. If you have anything like this happen (or any other issues), I would of course greatly appreciate it if you could fill in the form here, with any information about the crash! Cheers!

Thanks for playing the demo!!!!!!!!1!!! (It's genuinely been really amazing to see a heap of wishlists coming in from Next Fest, considering how little marketing I'm doing for the game, so thank you very much for your support. If you like what you've played, the best way you can help out is to share the game with friends and family and hell even people you don't like.)

Update Changelog

  • Improved keyboard button prompts. All keys now have their own icon, and descriptive key names have been reduced. (e.g. arrow symbols for arrow keys rather than “” etc)
  • Greater (hopefully 100%?) consistency of button prompts being highlighted (red).
  • Added a bunch more controller button prompt symbols, so instead of “D-Pad Left” or “Left Stick Down”, you’ll get a symbol as you'd expect.
  • The items you've viewed in the inventory are now saved across runs, so they should now only highlight and show a button prompt if you have NEVER seen them.
  • UI Toast messages - the ones that drop down from the top of the screen - now have a sound effect.
  • Reworded inventory get/remove toast prompts - now written as “ added to inventory / removed from inventory {button prompt}” and with the item now highlighted in red.
  • Launcher window should now appear in the centre of the screen rather than in the top left corner.
  • Minor UI improvements and tweaks, most notably more usage of black backgrounds behind text elements.
  • Improved a couple of slightly confusing dialogue flows - e.g. Delta Seven can give you compass coordinates in several flows, and in one of these flows there was previously no reply for the compass tutorial. (there is now one)
  • Improved some technical backend issues handling off-screen asteroid updates, which should result in a noticeable FPS increase when more asteroids are in the world.
  • Fixed a bug that was causing unpredictable multi-frame hitches after playing the game for a while.
  • Fixed mining laser and thruster sounds not responding to volume settings.
  • Fixed astronaut not spinning around space shuttle.
  • Removed Herobrine.

Edit: DemoVersion4.1 pushed to fix a small bug this update introduced.

  • Fixed red highlight flickering and sometimes overflowing from UI toasts.
  • Nearby NPC name is now positioned as expected at 4:3 screen resolutions. (4:3 still not fully supported and sticking to 16:9 is greatly recommended)
