Skins used to be a text file somebody handed you on Discord. Now you build one inside the game, on a chart playing under your hands, and publish it to the Steam Workshop when you are done.

THE SKIN EDITOR

Every skin ever made shares the same black lanes and the same rounded-square notes. Go break that.

Where it lives

  • SETTINGS › SKIN › EDIT SKIN. Gameplay and Visuals were two tabs ⇒ one Skin tab, with the skin picker on top of it.
  • A REAL WINDOW over a real chart playing itself. Drag it, resize it, hide it with H.
  • EVERYTHING APPLIES LIVE — no restart, no reload, no save to see it.
  • A TRANSPORT BAR with a timeline, a kiai badge and a drawer to pick any chart in your library.

What a skin can change

  • NOTES AND RECEPTORS: ten shapes the game draws for you — circle, ring, rounded, square, diamond, bar and four arrows — or your own file.
  • HOLD TAILS: their own texture, colour and width.
  • LANE EDGES AND CENTRE LINES: texture, colour and thickness, with a second coat for kiai.
  • THE WATER UNDER THE LANES: its ripple, its tint, its size, or off.
  • JUDGEMENTS: words, images, or both.
  • THE HUD: health, combo, score, accuracy and duration — move, resize, rotate, recolour. Click one on the playfield to jump to its row.

Sharing, and the Workshop

  • EXPORT AND IMPORT move the whole skin — file, textures, sounds and preview — as one file.
  • UPLOAD TO THE STEAM WORKSHOP from inside the editor.
  • SUBSCRIBE and it is in your skin list with no restart. It forks the moment you edit it, so nobody's work gets overwritten.
  • FIVE SKINS ARE UP ALREADY: White Skin, Arrows, Circles, Mini Circles and Squares. Four are drawn entirely from the editor's own shapes.
  • LEAVING WITH UNSAVED WORK now asks: save, discard or cancel.

HIT SOUNDS

  • A CHART CAN NAME A SAMPLE PER NOTE, and a skin can carry its own hit and miss sounds.
  • THE ORDER: the beatmap's sample, then the skin's, then the game's.
  • THREE SLIDERS: one Effects slider for everything that was not music ⇒ music, hit sounds and master, each on its own.

THE MODIFIERS WINDOW

  • THE LAYOUT: four columns of description cards over two screens ⇒ seven columns of tiles, with the description in the tooltip
  • SPEED: six cards for six fixed rates ⇒ a slider, any rate you like
  • COLOUR: twelve, one per mod ⇒ three, one per section

MODS FROM THE PAUSE MENU

The moment you decide the rate is too high is halfway through the song.

  • OPENING MODS: song selection only ⇒ song selection, pause and game over
  • CHANGING ONE MID-RUN: Escape resumed with the old mods ⇒ Continue becomes Apply and restart

WHAT A RATE COSTS, AND PAYS

  • THE MAX WINDOW AT 2.00x: 25 ms of real time ⇒ 33 ms. The squeeze stops at 1.50x.
  • WHAT A RATE PAYS: up to ×1.10 ⇒ flat ×1.0667 from 1.50x up
  • THE DIFFICULTY OF A RATE: interpolated, and wrong by 41% at 0.50x ⇒ measured at every rate, with 105,026 markers recalculated

SIX ACTION KEYS

  • AN ACTIONS TAB: fast reset, pause, speed up and down, offset up and down — four of them worked before and none of them appeared anywhere.
  • A LOCAL OFFSET PER BEATMAP: five milliseconds a press, kept by hash, on top of the global one.
  • THE RESET BUTTON draws your key on itself, instead of telling you to press "BackQuote".

FIND A CHART BY HOW IT PLAYS

  • EVERY CHART IS READ NOTE BY NOTE AND TAGGED: 1,997 difficulties, 6,749 tags, 96% carrying at least one.
  • FILTER BY PATTERN, LONG NOTES, SHAPE AND CONTENT, with the matching chips on every difficulty.
  • WRONG TAG? Five accounts can add one and five can take it off.

THE BEATMAPS YOU LIKED

  • A LIKED BEATMAPS LIST ON YOUR PROFILE, one row per song, with the difficulties you liked marked.
  • PUBLIC BY DEFAULT, with a switch to hide it from visitors.

SIX YEARS OF WORLD RANKING

  • RANKING HISTORY: a cron deleted it at fourteen days ⇒ kept forever, and rebuilt back to the first play ever recorded, 13 September 2020
  • A CHART ON YOUR PROFILE at ninety days or five years, with #1 at the top so climbing is a line that climbs.
  • THE BOARD shows how many SSS, SS and S each player has, and each count opens that list.
  • INACTIVITY: a name stayed on the board forever ⇒ six months without a play and you come off it. One clear puts you back.

THE FIRST RUN

  • A NEW INSTALL: zero songs ⇒ five sets and twenty-six beatmaps downloading while you answer the wizard
  • SIGNING IN: a slow Steam greeted a brand-new player with "Welcome back" ⇒ it waits for Steam
  • THE DOWNLOAD BROWSER: locked behind an account ⇒ open
  • LANGUAGE: guessed, behind a dead screen offering two ⇒ all fifteen in a grid, repainting as you choose
  • WHERE TO START: four tiles from very easy to hard, instead of one note speed for everybody

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • THE SPEED ONES: read a boolean per speed mod, which stopped existing when speed became a slider ⇒ read the rate you played at
  • TWO NEW ONES that scale with the top of the leaderboard.

BUGFIXES

  • Every published chart was quietly losing a note — the publisher's rewrite glued two notes into one. It reached 1,229 of the 1,819 charts in production, some uploaded in 2023. All of them have their note back.
  • A finished play is kept until the server says it has it.
  • The game says what happened on a run, not only what scored.
  • A short audio no longer announces every note it throws away.
  • The share button stopped outranking the one beside it.
  • A long translation no longer breaks a menu label in two.
  • The video and the hit sounds come across with the beatmap.
  • Charts that are not ranked stay out of the numbers that say Ranked.
  • The board's movement arrow refuses to be drawn across a change of pp formula.

The skin editor grew a search box, three switches for the sparks, and a proper override for what a hold looks like under your finger. And the playfield can be emptied of everything that is not the chart. LONG NOTES, DRAWN PROPERLY On the field A head, a body that tiles up from the tail, and a tail.
