Hello, I’m Kabocha Misoshiru from Pumpkin Miso Studio.I work an office job in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and spend my evenings and days off developing Night Portable, a horror game made with Unity 6, mostly on my own. When I first started making games, I had never used Unity, C#, or Blender. At the end of 2024, I installed Unity and began teaching myself through courses, videos, and documentation. After learning the basics by creating small projects, I started developing Night Portable around mid-February 2025.I also use ChatGPT and Codex as supporting tools for research, code brainstorming, and organizing the development process. I make the final decisions on design and implementation and review everything before using it.Midnight: The Night Shift Begins at a Used Game StoreNight Portable is set in a secondhand video game store with the atmosphere of the 2000s.The player works the night shift from midnight to 6:00 a.m., patrolling the store with a flashlight and a handheld game console. You must complete tasks such as cleaning and restocking products, but unexplained phenomena gradually begin to occur in the dark aisles and behind the shelves. The handheld console is not just a prop—it contains a fully playable 2D game. Items earned in the 2D game can be transferred to the 3D inventory and used during exploration. From the 2025 Prototype to Event ShowcasesThe first prototype consisted mostly of white walls and placeholder shelves. It was simply a space for testing the basic game mechanics.Since then, I have repeatedly rebuilt the models, lighting, UI, tasks, and enemy AI, gradually turning it into a detailed secondhand video game store. In 2026, I showcased a playable build at DREAMSCAPE4 and Tokyo Game Dungeon 11.Watching other people play revealed issues that were difficult to notice from the development screen alone, including insufficient tutorial guidance, unclear controls, and the difficulty of the first night.A Detailed Development Log Is Now AvailableI have published a detailed development log on GameWith Indie, covering the journey from starting game development with no prior experience to sharing progress on X and exhibiting the game at events. The article also includes a comparison between the 2025 prototype and the current version, details about the game systems, and photos from the events.Full development log on GameWith Indie (Japanese):
