Since version 0.1.35, most of the work has been focused on the computer-controlled opponents. The AI system has been almost completely rebuilt, with the goal of better connecting economic development, island expansion, army growth, and progression through the ages.

In addition, a new interface for attacking enemy islands has been added, Bronze Age content for the Orcs has been introduced, and numerous fixes have been made.

New AI Architecture

The AI has been almost completely moved to a new decision-making system.

This is a major internal overhaul that will serve as the foundation for further development of the computer-controlled opponents. However, the AI behavior itself is still far from finished. Future updates will focus on significantly improving its economy, development of captured islands, military decisions, and behavior during longer matches.

Army

The military side of the AI has also received many changes.

  • Army recruitment has been improved to better account for available population, the economy, and units already being trained.

  • If existing military camps cannot produce the required army quickly enough, the AI can now build additional ones.

  • After advancing to a new age, the AI can upgrade outdated troops instead of continuing to rely on units from the previous age.

  • When necessary, the AI can first construct the building required to upgrade its troops.

  • Actions related to attacking, defending, capturing territory, and moving armies have been reworked.

  • Fixed situations where a military objective could be repeatedly cancelled and recreated.

  • Improved AI behavior in longer matches with multiple opponents.

New Attack Interface

A new way to send your army to an enemy island has been added.

  • An attack button now appears above the enemy base.

  • Clicking it opens a separate window where you can choose the composition of the army you want to send.

  • You can select the desired number of units for each unit type.

  • A quick option to select all available troops has been added.

  • Unit types that cannot currently be sent are shown separately, making it easier to understand which troops are available for the attack.

  • The game is paused while the window is open and returns to the previous game speed after it is closed.

  • The previous method of sending armies through the island interface is still available.

Orcs: Bronze Age

Work on the second race has continued.

  • Bronze Age buildings have been added for the Orcs.

  • New Bronze Age Orc units have been added.

  • Construction stages have been added or updated for several buildings.

  • Existing Orc buildings have received additional visual improvements.

Interface and Visual Improvements

  • Bases now display flags in their faction colors, making territorial ownership easier to identify at a glance.

  • Several controls and interface elements have been improved.

  • Fixed issues with fonts and the display of certain UI elements.

  • Added new text and localization for newly introduced interface elements.

  • Fixed a number of smaller visual and gameplay issues.

What's Next

Work on the AI continues.

The next step is to further improve how computer-controlled opponents manage larger empires: developing multiple captured islands more consistently, distributing their economy more effectively between territories, and making stronger decisions during longer matches.

New content for the races and future ages will also continue to be added.

Thank you for playing Empires Edge and sharing your feedback. It helps identify the weaker parts of the game and decide what should receive the most attention in future updates.

Over the last several versions, I’ve been gradually rebuilding how the AI understands resources, makes economic decisions, and prepares for its next actions. In 0.2.23, that work has now been brought together into one consistent system. The AI now understands what it actually needs The AI is now much better at connecting…In-game event20 Aug 2026The Empires Edge Playtest has been updated to version 0.2.20This update includes another major improvement to the AI’s economic decision-making. AI opponents now react to the resources they actually need for their current plans, instead of treating every low or empty resource as an emergency. They also better understand resources already being saved for committed actions, which helps avoid unnecessary spending and duplicated resource demand.
