Gamepad Improvements

  • Virtual Keyboard
Onyx now has the first version of its own virtual keyboard that automatically opens when you select an input field with a gamepad.
While in-game and active, the virtual keyboard can be navigated using the D-pad (not yet fully supported in the main menu).
Labels, names, signs, etc. should be easily manageable with this.
Writing a novel into custom books might require extensions such as a key for line breaks or an expandable input field.
Feel free to let me know if you want more buttons.

  • Main Menu
Character creation and loading saved games can now also be navigated with the gamepad stick.
Note: The zombie shooter isn't gamepad-compatible yet, which should be fine for the time being.

  • NPC Gifting
You can now use the Action key to give the currently selected inventory item to an NPC standing in front of your character.
Keyboard & mouse players can still use drag & drop if they prefer.
Additionally, a safety check has been added to prevent tools, weapons, equipment, recipes, and structure-units from being gifted accidentally.

  • UI Toggles & Sliders
Gamepad UI clicks now fully support interactive elements like toggles for favoriting quests.
Sliders for adjusting settings, such as game difficulty, are also fully supported now.

  • Spell Dashes
Spell dashes like Windstep or Veilstep are now always executed in the movement direction instead of the mouse cursor direction.
Realized along the way that the ancient dashes aren't really pretty and desperately need an update.

  • Running with Mounts
Mounts now support the same run toggle as your character, replacing the previous hold-to-run behavior.

Improvements

  • Implemented Steamworks integration for future features like achievements and stats.

  • The player name in the character window can now also be changed using a gamepad.

  • Multiple improvements and fine-tuning for overall better gamepad support.

  • Improved pathfinding across all entities.
As mentioned in the previous update, bandits now move more reliably and no longer get stuck as often.

  • Lifted objects or entities can no longer be used as body shields to push enemies around at will.

  • Improved character control behavior when the cursor is positioned over the UI or the world.

  • Optimized Vesh's spawn behavior.

Fixes

  • The info when opening the shop now shows the correct keys for buying and selling, based on your active input (Keyboard or Gamepad).

  • Trying to sell an empty inventory slot no longer triggers an error.

  • Zombies revived with the Revive Zombie spell now correctly convert into companions again instead of attacking the player.

  • Fixed an issue where the Spectre spell Veilwalk would sometimes instantly cancel itself upon casting.

Major update5 Sep 2026ArchaeologyArchaeology While testing the game, the archaeology branch was honestly a bit sad to look at. Everything else kept growing, while archaeology literally stayed stuck in the Stone Age. That is why the following adjustments were made to better fit the current state of Onyx. These adjustments also create a nice little loop to finally bring the requested dinos into the game ha. · In larger regions e…In-game event17 Aug 2026GiantsGiants Yeah, that just had to be. The first giant versions of plantable crops have been added. Nobody still knows where Nick gets his weird rarities from, but from time to time (30 %), he may have a bag of these unusual seeds available in his shop. They can also occasionally be found as loot throughout the world. · Giant Carrot (drops a lot of Carrots) · Giant Parsnip (drops a lot of Parsnips)…Game update8 Aug 2026FixesSteamworks integration temporarily disabled due to hiccups. Will be re-enabled in upcoming updates. Many thanks for the reports, Cynthera!
