DISCLAIMER: In this update I use AI generated images as a placeholder for avatars and landscapes.

Welcome to another major update for Stellar Insurgency!

Update Highlights

  • Demo v4 Released
  • Galaxy Improvements
  • Scanline Effect for Communications Panel
  • Enhanced Hail Screen
  • Updated Landscape Images for Galaxy's objects.
  • New Galaxy Log Panel (or Captain's Log :))
  • Smoother Spaceship Stopping Animation

Demo v4 Released

Demo v4 is now available! It includes all previous updates and introduces the ability for players to travel to a neighboring solar system.

Realistic Star Density Distribution

The star density distribution now aligns with the density patterns of a particle-simulated spiral galaxy.
This realistic approach is based on the Density Wave Model, ensuring that the galaxy's structure mirrors scientifically accurate principles. Accessible stars are distributed according to this density, making exploration feel more immersive and authentic. In the future, I plan to introduce customizable sliders on the start screen, enabling players to create their own spiral galaxy by adjusting parameters like star density, galaxy shape, and overall size.

Scanline Effect for Communications Panel

To enhance immersion, a scanline effect has been added to the main image of the communications panel. This subtle, yet impactful visual detail provides a retro-futuristic aesthetic, mimicking the feel of classic sci-fi interfaces. It also helps to visually separate the communications panel from other UI elements, reinforcing its importance as a primary channel for receiving and interpreting mission-critical information. The effect dynamically adjusts with the panel's lighting, ensuring a consistent and engaging user experience.

Enhanced Hail Screen

Each faction now has unique characters with distinctive avatars.
Faction-specific designs are reflected in their ships' bridge backgrounds, showcasing their characteristic style. When interacting with planetary colonies, players will also see different room environments for each faction, adding depth and variety to interactions.

Updated Landscape Images for Galaxy's objects.

The landscape images of all planetoids have been updated, further strengthening the procedural aspect of the game. Each image is now meticulously designed to match the descriptive features of the corresponding celestial object, from barren rocky terrains to lush alien vistas. This update bridges the gap between the visual and narrative elements of the game, allowing players to feel a stronger connection to the worlds they explore. The variety and uniqueness of the images emphasize the distinctiveness of each planetoid, enhancing the depth of the game's universe.

New Galaxy Log Panel (or Captain's Log :))

A new log panel has been introduced to provide players with a centralized repository of relevant information about the galaxy and their actions. This panel serves as a comprehensive record, storing details about major events, player fleet configurations, and exploration reports. It offers an organized and accessible way for players to review their progress, analyze past decisions, and plan future strategies. By integrating this feature, the game ensures that players remain engaged with the evolving narrative and mechanics of the galaxy.

Smoother Spaceship Stopping Animation

The animation for the spaceship's stopping sequence has been significantly refined to ensure smoother transitions. When the spaceship decelerates, the movement now feels fluid and natural, improving the overall visual quality. Additionally, the engines gradually power down in sync with the ship's motion,
with subtle visual and audio cues marking the shutdown. These enhancements not only improve the aesthetic appeal but also add a layer of realism, making the act of navigating and stopping the spaceship feel more immersive and polished.

My goal is to create a richly procedural world with interconnected events, ensuring that every playthrough is not only unique but also feels truly distinct.

Have a happy new year!
