This update expands Stellar Insurgency’s procedural foundation with planetary biomes, environmental and social hazards, and fully procedural exploration. Planets and colonies now function as dynamic simulation nodes that influence crew safety, trade, and faction stability, while auto-generated planetoid sprites further reinforce a uniquely generated galaxy each playthrough. These systems work together to create emergent, unscripted events that make every run meaningfully different.

My long-term goal is to create a fully procedural galaxy that supports genuine emergent gameplay.
Procedural generation uses rules and mathematical systems to construct the stage itself—star systems, planets, colonies, and factions—ensuring that every playthrough begins in a galaxy with a unique structure.
Emergent complexity is what happens when simple systems such as trade, hunger, diplomacy, and aggression interact within that stage. These interactions produce unscripted outcomes like trade wars, regional shortages, or faction-wide instability, without relying on hand-authored events.
Planetary biomes have been added. A biome acts as the mechanical “DNA” of a planet, transforming it from a static background object into an active simulation node. Biomes influence crew safety, economic value, exploration outcomes, and even ship integrity.
Each biome draws from a pool of environmental hazards influenced by external parameters such as temperature, radiation levels, and proximity to the system’s star. Biomes also define a planet’s visual identity, for example volcanic worlds, frozen planets, or irradiated wastelands.
Planets can now be scanned, probed, and explored multiple times. Exploration is fully procedural: each attempt selects a biome-related scenario with different rewards and penalties that directly affect crew state and ship condition.
Sending an away team via transporter requires at least one officer. If the officer is killed during the mission, the exploration immediately terminates.
Colonies can also be explored. Social hazards such as civil unrest or famine may be discovered, and these events can propagate outward, disrupting nearby trade routes and affecting the overall stability of the owning faction.

A new pipeline has been implemented to automatically generate sprites for planetoids such as planets and stars. This strengthens the procedural nature of the game and removes dependence on manual asset creation, or my limited Photoshop abilities.

Current development is focused on deepening these procedural systems and strengthening their interconnections. The aim is a galaxy where dynamic systems consistently produce meaningful, unpredictable outcomes—so that every playthrough is not just different, but fundamentally distinct.
