Snake: Gridbreaker Demo · published · build 24286420
Hey Gridbreakers! This update started as a polish pass and then apparently devoured several other updates. Snake can now consume a defeated boss, Recovery Packet introduces a new reactive healing mechanic, Phase Shed can save a run from self-collision, and Forest Sporelings have become a surprisingly nutritious tactical option. The update also brings a much larger adaptive soundtrack, smarter reward and shop offers, fully reworked item and powerup feedback, clearer build information, new Tactical Scans, Secret Room improvements, accessibility changes, controller fixes, and extensive performance work.
Lethal head bites can now devour bosses, granting four growth segments and triggering a destructive 7x7 feast shockwave.
Added Recovery Packet, a new stackable run upgrade that creates collectible healing Scales after qualifying body hits.
Phase Shed can now prevent one self-bite crash per level by shedding the entire body.
Forest Sporelings can now be safely devoured for three growth segments.
Added a greatly expanded adaptive soundtrack with biome variants, boss themes, Secret Room music, contextual stings, and smoother transitions.
Reward selections and shops now produce more varied and strategically useful choices.
Collected items and powerups now physically travel, open, drain, or enter Snake before their UI effects appear.
Timed powerups now visibly expire from tail to head.
Every Tail Mutation now has a dedicated first-acquisition transformation.
Improved Secret Room puzzles, navigation, Ghost interactions, camera behavior, and feedback.
Added Tactical Scans for Splitters and Splitter Fragments.
Improved long-Snake rendering, background audio loading, idle systems, and the Performance quality preset.
Refreshed High Contrast and color-blindness presentation.
Fixed accidental controller input after closing the Steam Overlay or returning to the game.
A lethal head bite against a boss now becomes a true devour instead of a regular defeat. When the final head bite lands:
Snake moves into the boss's vacated cell.
Snake gains four growth segments.
The new segments appear through four heavy digestion pulses instead of appearing instantly.
A feast shockwave erupts across a 7x7 area centered on the defeated boss.
Non-boss enemies caught in the area are destroyed.
Hazards caught in the area are removed.
Pending board-wipe cells inside the affected area are cancelled.
Consumed enemies and hazards use their real board visuals during the effect.
The Gatekeeper defeat sequence now reacts differently when the final hit is a head devour. Its shell visibly compresses into Snake before the remaining defeat sequence continues. The Grid spent all that time building a boss. Snake has decided it is lunch.
Recovery Packet is a new Uncommon run upgrade with two stacks. When a direct, unblocked, and non-fatal enemy attack damages one of Snake's body segments, a Shed Scale appears near the point of impact. Collecting the Scale with Snake's head restores exactly 1 HP.
One activation per level.
The Scale remains available for 6 seconds.
Two activations per level.
Newly created Scales remain available for 9 seconds.
Purchasing the second stack during a level adds the additional activation without resetting an already active Scale.
Direct enemy attacks against a body segment.
Turret attacks that hit a body segment.
Direct boss attacks against the body.
Damage to Snake's head.
Damage blocked by a shield.
Damage ignored through invincibility.
Fatal damage.
Hazards.
Fire or burn damage.
Walls.
Self-collision.
Food-related damage.
Additional rules:
Only one Scale can be active at a time.
Hits received while a Scale is already active do not consume another activation.
Magnet cannot collect the Scale.
Body and tail segments can pass over it without collecting it.
Collecting it at full health still consumes it but does not create a fake healing event.
Its timer pauses while gameplay time is paused, including shops.
It remains functional inside Risk Chambers and Secret Rooms.
Its position, remaining time, and used activations are preserved when continuing a saved run.
Moving to another board removes the active Scale without refunding its activation.
Phase Shed now has a much stronger defensive purpose. Once per level, colliding with your own body no longer immediately ends the run. Instead:
Snake bites through its own body.
The entire body is shed.
Snake survives as a single head segment.
The movement continues instead of being rejected.
The emergency use becomes unavailable until the next level.
Phase Shed retains its original utility as well: whenever length is shed through a supported mechanic, one nearby hazard within two cells is erased. Dedicated self-bite visuals, camera feedback, hit stop, HUD status, pause-menu information, and availability tracking have been added so the mechanic is easier to understand during a run.
Forest Sporelings can now be eaten by moving directly into them. Devouring one:
Deals no contact damage.
Moves Snake into the Sporeling's cell.
Grants exactly three growth segments.
Reveals those segments through three digestion pulses.
Counts as a successful head bite.
Tank's Shield Bash now correctly defers to the devour interaction. Eating a Sporeling does not spend a Tank shield charge.
Volt Tail has been redesigned. Previously, only the tail tip attacked when it moved next to an enemy. Now the entire tail releases timed electrical pulses. First stack:
