Third Person Update

major update

Alliance Peacefighter · published · build 21245526

The 1.2.1 Patch is live now! The full changelog is below, but the feature we're most excited about is the new third-person mode. We know a lot of space sim fans prefer the exterior view and we're happy to finally be able to offer it.

The game is also 33% off in the Winter Sale, so if you haven't picked the game up yet this will probably be the steepest discount for a while. Thanks to everyone who has bought the game, and if you enjoyed it please leave a review as we're only a few off from that magic 50.

Wishing you all happy holidays and a great new year.

Updates in this patch:

  • Added third person camera mode

  • Added VR spectator camera for content creators (disabled by default due to performance cost)

  • Added yaw pedal axis that allows a physical yaw pedal to be used in conjunction with VR virtual controls

  • Added positional tracking to OpenTrack support (off by default)

  • Added keybinds for targeting next/previous enemy

  • Added keybinds for targeting next/previous ally

  • Added hints to some of the less obvious settings

  • Smoothed out animation/IK transitions when grabbing and letting go of controls in VR

  • Throttle will now be hidden in VR when auto throttle is enabled

  • Match speed now works with projectiles

  • Decreased cost of using lateral thrust

  • Slightly increased the player ship's turning speed

  • Replaced the accuracy indicators (which were pretty useless) with an indicator for available missile packs

  • Adjusted shield meshes on carriers so that shields no longer extend inside of the hangar

  • Fixed some errors in the "previously on" texts

  • Fixed button click audio not playing when using controller to navigate main menu

  • Fixed bug where moving hand outside the grip radius would move joystick in random rotation rather then letting go

  • Fixed bug where AI teammates would break off from player target even if that target was priority

  • Fixed bug where opening the Steam overlay during cutscene dialog would unpause the game but continue the conversation in the background

  • Fixed bug where collisions would not correctly trigger shield impact effect

  • Fixed WCDR Frayla's eye rotation during dialog scenes

  • Tweaked cockpit shake to remove jitter at certain framerates

  • Increased default HUD scale on Steam Deck

  • Tweaked loading bar to make it clearer the game is still loading even when the main bar freezes

Known issues: On "Cannibal Vector" Kaitumi will clip though the third person camera when docking with the player. There is also a minor bug where switching from third person to first and back again while at warp will lock the freelook. These issues will be addressed in the next patch.

A note on OpenTrack positional translation - this will take raw values from OpenTrack, so you'll need to setup your min/max translation values in OpenTrack and make sure everything is correctly calibrated. I had an issue where turning my head resulted in x/y translation and I could not fix this no matter what I tried, but the test tracker worked fine. Just note if you're new to the software, activating positional tracking without having things correctly setup in OpenTrack might lead to some weird behaviour.
