Command Mode Update — Fight as an Admiral

On Steam

Command Mode is now ready for battle.

With this update, fleet command has been completely reworked around the real limitations of communication at sea.You will no longer have perfect control over every ship in your fleet.Orders from your flagship must now be transmitted to subordinate vessels through flags, sound signals, light signals, and other communication methods. Information that has not reached your flagship will remain unknown to you as well. You are no longer controlling individual ships from above. You are commanding a fleet from the deck of your flagship.

Command Through Signals

Every signal has a limited effective range. To maintain proper control over a large fleet, relay ships must be positioned carefully throughout the battlefield. If your fleet is poorly arranged, you may find yourself unable to transmit orders to distant squadrons at the moment you need them most.Communication itself is now part of the battle. The basic command process is:Flagship issues an order → Target ship receives the signal → Signal is decoded → Target ship responds → Flagship confirms the response → Execution time is assignedHowever, not every ship will complete this process at the same speed. Each captain and officer has different abilities, meaning the time required to identify and decode a signal can vary considerably. In a large fleet, even a seemingly simple maneuver may take significant time to organize and execute.

Your Captains Are Individuals

Commanding officers are divided among approximately 38 different personality and behavioral traits. Some officers will follow the tactical plan you established faithfully.Others may hesitate, misjudge the situation, act aggressively, behave cautiously, or even decide to take independent action when circumstances deteriorate. The tactical instructions you establish before battle will influence their behavior. But they are not machines.Once the battle begins, events may develop in ways that even the player cannot completely control. That uncertainty is intentional.A real naval battle was never a perfectly synchronized movement of pieces across a board.Smoke, distance, visibility, damaged rigging, confused signals, individual judgment, delayed information, and simple human error could change everything.Command Mode attempts to bring that uncertainty onto the battlefield.

Imperfect Information

The player can only make decisions based on information that has actually been collected and delivered.Confirmed battlefield information will be recorded on your naval chart.Enemy ships will not simply appear because they happen to exist somewhere on the battlefield. If they have not been observed or reported, you will not know they are there. This means reconnaissance, visual observation, and communication between ships are now just as important as firepower.

Coalition Fleets

Not every fleet communicates equally well.Ships belonging to different allied navies may experience greater difficulty coordinating signals and orders. In a coalition fleet, communication delays and differences in officer capabilities can therefore become serious tactical problems.A fleet may be numerically powerful while still being extremely difficult to command effectively.

Emergency Orders

You do not always have to wait until every subordinate ship has acknowledged an order. In an emergency, you may order only the ships that have already responded to begin the maneuver immediately, while the remaining ships continue receiving or decoding the signal.Whether you wait for the entire formation or act with only part of the fleet is your decision.Sometimes maintaining formation will be more important. But in other situations, waiting even one more minute may cost you the battle.

Dispatch Boats

When a ship is too far away for normal signal communication, you may use a dispatch boat to deliver orders directly. This gives commanders another option when signal communication becomes unreliable or impossible. However, distance still matters.A distant squadron cannot instantly understand your intentions simply because you clicked an order.

Battle Sim Scenarios

Three scenarios have been prepared specifically for the new Battle Sim Command Mode.

1. Battle of Trafalgar

A massive fleet engagement involving 73 ships. This scenario is designed to demonstrate the full scale of the command system, including fleet organization, relay communication, and large-scale signal management.

2. Battle of the Nile

night battle where limited visibility, light signals, and incomplete battlefield information become especially important.

3. Battle of Dogger Bank

A smaller introductory scenario designed to help players learn the new signal and command systems.I strongly recommend beginning with Dogger Bank.Once you are comfortable issuing orders, interpreting acknowledgements, and managing communication delays, you will be much better prepared to command the enormous fleets of Trafalgar and the Nile.

How to Play Command Mode

1. Select a ScenarioChoose one of the available Battle Sim scenarios.2. Prepare Your StrategyBefore the battle begins, establish tactical behavior for individual ships and squadrons. You can define movement routes, escort assignments, following behavior, and other tactical instructions. These represent the operational plans prepared before the engagement begins.3. Enter BattleOnce combat begins, you directly control only your own flagship. All other ships must be commanded through the command panel, naval chart, and signal system.4. Issue and Confirm SignalsEvery order must pass through the actual communication process.Your flagship transmits the signal, subordinate ships receive and decode it, and their responses return to the flagship. The player can then determine when the maneuver should begin.5. Win the BattleVictory and defeat conditions remain the same as in the existing scenarios. What has changed is the way you command the forces attempting to achieve those objectives.

The Battlefield Will Not Always Obey You

There will be moments when your fleet does not respond exactly as you expected.A captain may act independently.A signal may take longer to decode than expected.A distant squadron may fail to receive an order. The enemy may begin its attack while only half of your formation has acknowledged your maneuver order.Information may arrive too late. And sometimes, the situation itself may simply move beyond your control. That does not necessarily mean the command system has failed. That is part of commanding a fleet in battle.Your task is not to control everything.Your task is to make decisions despite the things you cannot control.

Because this system changes many aspects of battlefield communication and AI behavior, there may still be situations or bugs that were not discovered during development. If you encounter any problems, please report them.I will continue improving the system based on your experiences on the battlefield.Command Mode was born from your ideas. Thank you.— Developer of Ship of the Line
