Meet Mourne, Vesper, Rook & Sable — Four New Ways to Face Death

Four new faces. Four very different ways to survive.

You've met Maximus, Ashlee, Luna and Zane. Now let's spend some time with the other four heroes of Leaderboards Till I Die!: Mourne, Vesper, Rook and Sable.

I wanted each of them to feel like someone with a reason to keep going—and a very different answer to a crowd closing in.

Each hero has an automatic signature attack and six manual skills, unlocking at levels 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. This spotlight explores their latest development kits. The gameplay GIFs show their automatic attacks; the new illustrations give you a closer look at the people behind them.

Mourne — The Bellwarden

"The bell is heavy. The duty, heavier."

Mourne once rang the final bell for those who had no one left to remember them. When the dead began answering, he lifted the bell from its tower and took his duty on the road.

How Mourne plays: A durable fighter who wants enemies within ringing distance. The automatic Funeral Bell damages and pushes nearby enemies, rebuilding a small protective ward with every toll.

The six skills

  • Death Toll: A wide bell burst that damages, slows and pushes the crowd.
  • Bell Lance: Drive a narrow lane of piercing resonance through enemy ranks.
  • Grave Canticle: Place a ward that repeatedly damages and slows enemies for five seconds.
  • Iron Lament: Gain a shield and release three armor-scaled pulses.
  • Pallbearer Chain: Pull nearby enemies inward for the next toll.
  • Last Requiem: Sound three delayed tolls with growing reach and force.

Build around it: Take Iron Requiem to turn armor into extra bell damage. Funeral Dominion expands your reach and strengthens the ward gained per toll.

Vesper — The Mothkeeper

"They like you. Please don't mistake that for mercy."

Vesper found a lantern glowing where every other light had died. The little wings inside followed her home. She speaks to them like beloved pets—and carefully avoids the question of what they used to be.

How Vesper plays: Keep moving and let the swarm hunt. Automatic Soul Moths seek enemies while Vesper uses snares, escape tools and stolen health to stay alive.

The six skills

  • Hungry Constellation: Call six hungry moths to pursue enemies.
  • Lantern Lances: Fan three piercing soul lances ahead of the lantern.
  • Silk Snare: Lay a field that slows and damages enemies.
  • Ashen Molt: Shed an explosive veil and briefly become invulnerable.
  • Soul Harvest: Siphon up to six enemies, healing from damage actually dealt.
  • Eclipse Brood: Summon a brood alongside three delayed hatching explosions.

Build around it: Summon-damage gear strengthens the moths. A Thousand Hungers keeps them alive longer and spreads their attention across more enemies.

Rook — The Scrap Arbalist

"Cheap scrap. Very expensive place to stand."

Rook learned to survive by making broken things useful again. The arbalest is a lifetime of scavenged parts, stubborn repairs and improvements nobody asked for. The little goblin's workmanship is easiest to appreciate from behind the firing line.

How Rook plays: Line them up and punch through. The automatic Arbalest sends a spread of piercing bolts into enemy ranks, while deployable tools help Rook control the approach.

The six skills

  • Scrap Barrage: Send a burst of arbalest bolts in every direction.
  • Railspike: Punch a long, narrow penetrator through aligned enemies.
  • Shrapnel Mine: Plant a proximity mine that detonates on approach or after its timer runs out.
  • Repeater Nest: Deploy a stationary, target-tracking repeater for eight seconds.
  • Grapeshot: Blast a close cone and drive enemies backward.
  • Siege Engine: Deliver three delayed barrages along your firing line.

Build around it: Scavenger's Broadside adds bolts to each volley; every third rank adds another pierced target. Ratchet & Ruin keeps the mechanism firing faster.

Sable — The Last Second

"You have a moment. I suggest spending it well."

Sable remembers the moment her life should have ended. She also remembers the second that came after it. Now she fights with the hands of a broken clock, searching for whoever gave her that extra moment—and what they expect in return.

How Sable plays: Strike, reposition, and let time catch up. Automatic Echo Blades cut nearby targets, then strike their recorded positions again a moment later.

The six skills

  • Borrowed Future: Mark nearby enemy positions for powerful delayed cuts.
  • Clockhand Lunge: Slash a forward lane with a long clockhand blade.
  • Stillpoint: Create a damaging field that slows enemies for five seconds.
  • Afterimage: Leave three staggered cuts around a captured target position.
  • Stolen Tempo: Release a time pulse and speed up automatic timeblade attacks for six seconds.
  • Final Second: Mark up to six enemy positions for two delayed strikes.

Build around it: An Ending Twice strengthens both the first cut and its echo. Splintered Timeline marks more enemies and expands the echo area every third rank.

Who gets your next life?

The Bellwarden, the Mothkeeper, the Scrap Arbalist, or the Last Second?

Tell me which hero you want to try—and which skill you'd like to see in a deeper gameplay showcase.

Thanks for playing MegaDope 2D. There's a lot of personality hiding behind these weapons, and I'm excited to share more of it.
