Hi everyone,
First of all, we want to thank all of you for playing the OMEA demo, Odin's Trial. Watching people play it and reading what you thought of it has meant a great deal to us, and it is the reason we keep going. One question comes back more often than any other: what are your plans for the future? So today we want to share one of the adventures you will find in the full version of OMEA: The Last Vigil.
It is our take on a classic fantasy adventure, dark fantasy to be exact, with a proper investigation running through it. You take on the role of one of six characters (rouge, warrior, wizard, cleric, bard or monk), and each of them has a different reason for accepting the job. The job itself sounds simple: deliver a package to a small inn called the Last Vigil, in a village in the middle of nowhere, and hand it to a man named Malachar Drent.
"It was supposed to be a simple job: deliver a package to a remote village inn. The pay was too good, the task too easy, and the collector's desperate eyes and shaking hands suggested he just wanted the thing gone. How could you refuse?"
The package turns out to raise more questions than it answers. The man you were sent to deliver the package is nowhere to be found. Then a fog rolls over the inn and part of the village, and you discover that you cannot leave.
A curse comes with it, and it is on you. You are stuck inside the fog with everyone else it caught, and you have to work out what happened here before the curse kills you, or before the creatures it has already touched get to you first.
"The Last Vigil is an adventure that focuses heavily on the fantasy premise while giving players freedom to explore, investigate and defeat challenges on their own terms. I wanted to recreate a feeling when you play a RPG with a team - but this time you have control over how to push the narrative, what to say to others whether you treat them good, befriend them, or betray them - or simply ask them about themselves, their opinions, their stories. Plus, you get to meet them in the most classy way - at the tavern (!), where all of you are trapped. The crucial part is: it's easier to go together, but you can also do it on your own - the adventure is prepared for pc going solo. This also means if you pick a fight with NPC he might leave for good or turn on you - and it's up to you how you handle this." - Dominika, Game Designer.
The adventure is built around finding out what the package you delivered really is, where the fog came from, and why you were sent into the middle of it. You question the people trapped with you, follow up on what does not add up, and piece the story together from what you learn. Not everything can be solved by asking questions, though. The fog brought things in with it, and some of them have to be fought.
We put a lot of work into the NPCs who are stuck in the Last Vigil alongside you. They have their own personalities, their own way of behaving and their own opinions about you and about each other. You can become friends with them, argue with them, and rely on them when the situation calls for it. We wanted this adventure to feel like being part of a group that has your back, rather than solving a mystery on your own.
Like every adventure in OMEA, this world was written by our professional game masters before the AI ever runs it. The village, its cast and its internal logic are set in advance, which is what makes OMEA play like a game rather than an open conversation. Every world has its own rules, its own consistent NPCs and its own answer waiting at the end of the investigation.
The Last Vigil will be part of the full version of OMEA. If you want to be there when it launches, you can wishlist OMEA on Steam.
