A New Look and Revamped Playtest Flow

Hi Pilots!

There is a new playtest build available now! Join the playtest from the store page! Today's build debuts a new look and a revamped playtest flow.

Adrift is a game about rebuilding. It's important that the art direction matches that theme. In pursuit of that vision I have added lights that react to your progress through the game. I am hoping this adds spectacle and signals progress more explicitly. The new boundary sprites feature shadows and light masks to add depth and make the world feel more three dimensional as they interact with the new lights.

The first level you encounter in the playtest is meant to teach you how to play. Previously at in-person playtests folks would have a blast in mechanic sandbox levels after I taught them how to play. I can't teach EVERYONE across the world how to play, so this learning level needs to be something folks can just pick up and enjoy. This has proven to be pretty tough! Today's build breaks some of the learning into smaller lessons to try to make it easier to pick up. It also tries to be more explicit with signaling objectives.

Fun fact: the light flares are processed images of the Cat's Eye Nebula.

I have been working on the story, feedback from my last playtest, adding a bit of visual spectacle, and core systems work. Let's talk about the story for Adrift. Just why are you flying through space budging around ship capsules? The game will begin like this: You are aboard a colony ship of…In-game event23 Sep 2026"Build it Up"-date!Not in the Playtest yet? Join from the Store Page! Today the prototype gains a new level. Choose "Repair Base" from the level selection to try it out! In "Repair Base" you find fellow survivors who are stuck floating. Can you anchor them and build up this tiny outpost? Previously I was working on a "Learn to Play" level. This let me develop visual language to teach new players how to play. The…In-game event9 Sep 2026Echoes in SpaceNot in the Playtest yet? Join from the Store Page! There is no sound in space...until now! For the past few months Adrift has been silent. Zero audio. I've been doing the bulk of my playtesting in noisy bars. No one would have been able to hear the audio anyway. That all changes today! Release notes at the end. With this update I consider the tutorial scene to be in a pretty good place. I will…
