In Whitechapel, death is rarely the end of the story.
One of the biggest challenges while designing 4 Penny Coffins was answering a simple question: "What happens when a player dies?"
In many multiplayer games, death means waiting. You spend the rest of the match watching other people have fun while you hope the round ends quickly. We wanted to avoid that entirely. Instead, we designed death to be another part of the investigation.
Every night ends with a difficult decision.
Players gather in the gallows, present their evidence, challenge each other's stories and alibis, and ultimately decide who should face conviction.
The conviction phase is one of the most dramatic moments in every match - it is where suspicion becomes accusations, alibis are second-guessed, and a single vote can change everything.
One of our goals was making every execution feel like a significant event. Our artists explored several concepts while designing the gallows, aiming to capture the grim atmosphere of Victorian Whitechapel without losing the stylized look of 4 Penny Coffins.
From rough sketches to the final environment, we wanted the gallows to feel like a place everyone feared facing, but looked to when it was time to deliver justice!
(Initial implementation: Gallows with Crime Scene and Evidence boards)
(final / in-game implementation: Gallows scene)
Justice in Whitechapel isn't clean or certain - sometimes you get it right... but sometimes you could be dead wrong.
In 4 Penny Coffins, being executed or murdered doesn't remove players from the match. Instead, after a brief visit to the afterlife, you return as a ghostly apparition of your former self.
While you can no longer speak with the living, you'll join a dedicated 'dead chat' where fallen players can share theories, debate the investigation, and speculate who the Ripper really is.
While ghost players cannot cast regular votes for conviction, you aren't completely powerless. Ghost players are able to continue to gather evidence and non-verbally present findings, allowing you to still help steer the investigation.
We also wanted death to have meaningful consequences. Returning as a ghost means forfeiting the money you have earned, so staying alive is in your best interest.
So, whether you met an unfortunate end at the hands of the Ripper or were wrongly executed by the scared citizens of Whitechapel, your story isn't over...
