Homecoming Update Devlog#4 - Building a Home for the Family

Hello Prospectors!

We've already shown you your sister, your mother, and the new family story coming with the free Homecoming Update.

Now it's time to show you something that will bring them all together:

Your new family home! 🏡

Until now, the hotel was your main place to rest. But with Homecoming, you'll finally have a proper house of your own - and, of course, we had to make sure it felt like a real part of Alaska.

🪵 Building the House in 3D

The house was created in Blender, using our existing buildings as a base for the design.

One of the tricks we used to make the wooden walls look more natural was to give individual planks slightly different treatment. Each plank was painted with a different value using Vertex Paint, allowing us to control which boards would receive paint and which would remain bare wood.

The house also uses three different UV maps, which allow us to separately control the wood, dirt, and paint textures in the Unity material.

🎨 Not Every Plank Has to Look the Same

We also wanted to avoid the: "Congratulations, you've built a house made of exactly one shade of brown." ;)

One of the UV maps is divided into four sections. Depending on which section the UV islands of a particular plank are placed in, that plank receives a slightly different wood shade.

It's a small detail, but it helps create much more natural variation across the building.

🔨 From Blender to Unity

After the model was ready, we created the colliders in Blender and moved everything into Unity.

The individual props were then arranged around the house in the scene, from furniture and decorations to all the little details that make the building feel lived in.

But there was still one important step...

"Cottage to rent in the center of an unnamed village. 900 gold nuggets plus utilities. Close to the sea and the church."

The new family house will have separate rooms for each family member, with different utilities available throughout the building.
You'll also be able to make your home feel more personal with a garden and even a... garage for your dog sled! 🐕🛷 ;)

We've also added a new path connecting the house to the town, making getting around the area much easier and more convenient.

🏗️ Making the House Actually Work

The house isn't just something you can walk around and admire.

We also prepared its simple construction system, so different elements of the building can actually be built and repaired by the player.

That means you'll be able to work on the house yourself - including things like repairing damaged floors and completing different parts of the construction.

So yes, you'll finally have a home... but you're going to have to work for it.

And once it's ready, it'll be a place for you and your family to call home in Alaska.

More from the Homecoming Update coming soon!
