The Roguefort Demo has come off the Store page (but the Playtest is now live!)

Hey everyone,

The Roguefort Playtest has been live for a few weeks now and has attracted nearly 600 players! I'm blown away by the interest and the positive feedback so far, and even more blown away by the number and quality of suggestions and bug reports.

If you are reading this and haven't tried the Playtest yet, please join via the Roguefort Steam store page.

I was also stoked to learn that indie game streamer Nookrium played Roguefort on Twitch (thanks SamV for the heads up about this). Nookrium's stream provides a very enjoyable and informative voyage into the early game content and the whole cheese lore thing, so it's definitely worth checking out.

The demo is gone (for a while)

I'm writing this update on the game primarily to avoid some confusion regarding the demo versus playtest.

Roguefort has had both a demo and a playtest available, and the demo had fallen a long way behind. It's about 300 bug fixes and 50 major and minor features behind the playtest build.

So, I've taken the demo off the store page - the link just won't be available to click on.

What that means:

  • If you already have the demo installed then you can keep playing, no worries at all.

  • If you have the demo already, it will be in your library and you can play it still (though I strongly suggest installing the Roguefort Playtest, which gives you the whole game!).

  • The demo simply isn't downloadable or visible on the store page any more.

  • But, the demo will be back later, properly updated, in time for launch in October.

The bottomline is: please just go ahead and play the Playtest, if you want to see what Roguefort is all about. It's what I'm actively updating and working on, and there's a very active Discord community, which I encourage you to join if you haven't already.

How long is the Playtest available for?

The playtest will stay available until about a couple of weeks out from launch in October. This will give me time to transition everything cleanly and safely back to the demo, make sure save files behave themselves, and provide an indication of the roadmap ahead and what to expect in the Roguefort development timeline. I've got an official roadmap coming soon - this will be an important part of the Early Access release.

What are you working on now?

I've fixed around 200 bugs in the past couple weeks and done a huge amount of polishing and feature development. And it's all largely been driven from the Discord community, who are an incredible group of humans, and without which we would not have the sprawling, deep open world game that Roguefort is today (even in its playtest build).

But, right now I have gone into engineer mode and I am refactoring the code base, to get it in better shape ahead of some big feature implementations, and for a huge push on bug fixing. So, development is on pause this week, so to speak, while I refactor the code and get it into a position where I'm not playing "whack-a-mole" as much with bugs and tuning.

Thanks for playing, and for reading!

Tim
