Cappler’s Conspiracy is a new 2+ hour photography game hidden inside BIG HOPS. You’ll meet a conspiracy theorist Owl named Cappler who needs your help exploring some weird ideas. He’ll send you on jobs to prove (or disprove) the existence of Aliens, Ghosts, Mole People, and more. For your efforts you’ll be rewarded with dozens of new camera filters, lenses, and a special Sky Shifter gadget. To find Cappler and get to work, keep an eye out for Cappler’s special symbol hidden throughout the many worlds in BIG HOPS.
Since the release of BIG HOPS, our team has been in a good mood. Watching people engage so strongly with your work after many years working on it is SO rewarding. We’ve been focused on bug fixes and QOL improvements this whole time, but also feeling there’s some parts of the design we could take even further. Cappler’s Conspiracy is our first attempt at that. Hop’s camera gadget was at the top of my list for gameplay paradigms that had more design space to explore. Taking pictures and seeing the world of BIG HOPS in first person is inherently fun and we spent a lot of energy making the camera track a lot of information about what it sees, so I wanted to do more there.
There are a lot of photography games out there and so many great ideas for how to frame what you’re doing, so I wanted something that felt unique. Even though we’re dealing with cute animals in a colorful, kid-friendly world I love telling stories that feel weird, true, and defy expectation. Enter Cappler the conspiracy theorist Owl! He believes in Aliens, Ghosts, Mole People, Round Earth, and more. Maybe I’m being too idealistic with this part, but he’s also willing to change his mind if presented with strong evidence.
Cappler’s Conspiracy is accessible any time after you get the camera gadget partway through the Desert world! There’s a special symbol we’ve added to Desert Plains, Duster Bluffs, Beach Island, Rig Main, The Boneyard, and Mines Entrance you can photograph to reveal Cappler. There’s also a much stronger hint to Cappler’s whereabouts on the Airship if you are towards the end of the game already.
