In today’s article, we want to share with you a preview of the upcoming Brineworks Update (1.9) and some tips on how to prepare for it.
The update brings plenty of features and improvements, including:
New farm: Brineworks (grows Salt and Insects)

The update is scheduled to go live at around 2:00 pm UTC on November 20th.
Important: Make sure to finish your ongoing settlements before the update goes live - otherwise, they’ll need to be closed. More details below!
The Brineworks is a new farm building unlocked after reaching level 15. It allows you to grow Salt and Insects, which are hard to come by but essential in many recipes.
The Lurker is a bizarre creature that dwells deep underground, in vast networks of water-filled caverns. On rare occasions, it finds its way to the surface, lurking in small reservoirs and preying on unsuspecting fishermen.
Purify it to gain access to a Deep Pond - a rich fishing pond with more charges than a Large Pond and increased Fish yield per charge. But beware of its Drowsiness effect, as villagers may become unusually sleepy while attempting to resolve the event.
When exploring the forest, you can encounter a weathered stone statue that feels strangely... alive. It seems to shift ever so slightly when no one is watching.
Put it back to sleep with desperate prayers to gain a new decoration - the Dormant Gargoyle. Its unique effect will make installing rain engines a lot cheaper and will boost your rainwater production.
Found only in Forbidden Glades, the Small Stormforge can turn one of your cornerstones into its Stormforged version, or grant a random Stormforged cornerstone. It should be handled with extreme care, as even the most skilled engineers haven’t been able to preserve it once it has served its purpose.
Important: Due to numerous systemic changes, the update will close ongoing settlements to prevent potential issues. The game will treat an ongoing settlement as if it “didn’t happen”. As compensation, you’ll receive Citadel Resources equal to winning that game and a free Royal Resupply.
If you don't want your ongoing settlement to be closed, please finish it before the update goes live on November 20th at around 2:00 pm UTC. Your meta progress and Cycle progress will remain intact, except that World Events that were within sight will no longer be available.
We’ll also leave the current 1.8 version on a separate Steam branch for two weeks so that - if you’re absolutely desperate to do so - you can complete the settlement even after the Brineworks Update (1.9) goes live. However, we recommend that you consider this option as a last resort.
