Update 1.3 — Play to 100

Until now a game of Jacks, Twos & Eights ended when someone emptied their hand.
That was that. This update gives the table a scoreboard, the computer three
personalities, and you a record to look back on.

Match play

Hands now add up. Pick a target when you sit down — 50, 100, 200, or stick with
a single hand — and the winner of each hand banks whatever everyone else is
still holding.

  • 8 — 50 points
  • Jacks and 2s — 20 points
  • Kings, Queens, 10s — 10 points
  • Aces — 1 point
  • Everything else is worth its face value

Which puts the game's three favourite cards in an awkward new position. An 8 is
still the best card in the deck to play — and now the worst one to be caught
holding. Every hand asks the same quiet question: spend it now, or risk it?

Get caught with a fat hand and you'll hand over a small fortune. Go out while
someone's buried under a stack of 2s and you might take the match in one go.

Solo and pass-the-mouse tables keep score too, which they never did before.

Three computer opponents, not one

Pip, Harry and George now play at Easy, Normal or Hard.

Easy is generous. It plays loosely and forgets to knock more often than it
should. Normal is the opponent you already know.

Hard is the interesting one. It remembers the cards it has seen, works out which
suits you can't follow, hangs on to its 2s instead of its Jacks, and starts
dumping its expensive cards the moment it thinks a hand is lost. It never
forgets to knock, either.

It also never looks at your hand. Everything it knows, it worked out from cards
played face up on the table — same as you.

Your record

A new Your record screen on the main menu. Lifetime win rate, best
streak, how you do against each difficulty, and a full list of the 13
achievements with what each one takes.

If you've been playing since launch, your streak carried over — it's been quietly
counting all along.

Smoother and steadier

  • Achievements now sync both ways with Steam. If you ever earned one
while Steam was busy and it never showed up, it will appear next time you play.
Your progress also follows you to a new machine.
  • If the game ever hits trouble, it now says so and offers a way back to
the menu, instead of leaving you staring at a black screen.
  • Fixed a rare freeze when you were owed cards but the deck and pile had
    both run dry.
  • Dragging a card is smoother, and the table is lighter on older machines and
    the Steam Deck.

Thank you to everyone who has picked up the game so far — it's a small crowd and
I've read everything. If you find something odd, there's now an Open log
folder
button in Settings; that file is plain text, stays on your machine,
and it makes a bug much easier to track down.

Good luck at the table.
