The shop is only one small part of Neo Haven althoutgh the most important.
Most of Ghost Receipt takes place behind the counter, but I do not want the world outside the shop to feel like a static backdrop or sterile fill up world.
Neo Haven should continue moving while the player runs the business.
Rain falls across the streets. Hover vehicles travel between the city’s vertical levels. Trains arrive and depart. Workers pass through the district, security patrols nearby areas, and people briefly stop before continuing with their day.
I am currently working on the environmental systems and small details that make the city feel inhabited without turning the game into an open-world project with unicorns.
The area surrounding the shop acts as a window into the wider city.
From the storefront, players can see:
pedestrians moving through the district,
security and maintenance workers following their routines,
hover traffic crossing the skyline,
trains moving along elevated rails,
advertisements and neon signs illuminating the rain,
changes in lighting throughout the day.
These elements do not need to become complicated gameplay systems.
Their main purpose is to create the feeling that the shop belongs to a functioning city rather than existing in an isolated level.
Not every city interaction needs to be dramatic.
A civilian may stop beneath an advertisement before walking away.
A dockworker may pass through the street on the way to another shift.
Two pedestrians may briefly greet each other.
Someone may sit on a bench before continuing their route.
Security personnel may repeatedly patrol important entrances and upper platforms.
These simple routines help create natural movement around the shop while keeping the system lightweight enough to support larger crowds.
Neo Haven is designed as a dense, layered city.
The streets near the shop are surrounded by elevated platforms, industrial walkways, transport routes and distant buildings. Hover vehicles move across several traffic levels, while trains and pedestrians create activity closer to the player.
The goal is not to let the player explore every visible location.
Instead, the city should suggest that much more is happening beyond the playable area.
The shop becomes a small point inside a much larger network of workers, corporations, clinics, security forces and underground groups.
Atmosphere also changes over time.
During the day, the district feels active and commercial. Customers move through the streets, deliveries arrive and the shop handles its regular business.
At night, the same area becomes quieter and less predictable.
The rain, lighting, advertisements and ambient sounds become more noticeable. Different events can leave visible traces around the shop, while suspicious activity becomes more difficult to ignore.
A familiar street can feel very different after closing time.
The city also supports the rest of the game.
News reports can affect product availability and customer demand.
Faction activity can influence who appears near the shop.
Security presence can increase after suspicious transactions.
Local events may leave graffiti, trash or other signs that something happened during the night.
These reactions help connect the player’s decisions inside the shop with the world outside it.
The city does not need to explain everything directly.
Sometimes a changed patrol route, an unusual visitor or a new mark on the wall can say enough.
The next development phase focuses heavily on world building and atmosphere.
The main gameplay systems are already taking shape, so I can now spend more time improving:
pedestrian movement,
background traffic,
lighting and weather,
street activity,
environmental storytelling,
and the overall identity of Neo Haven.
The aim is to make opening the shop each morning feel like returning to a real place.
A place that continues moving whether the player is watching or not.
Ghost Receipt is currently in development.
Run a cyberpunk grocery store and pawn shop, negotiate with customers, examine suspicious objects and uncover the secrets hidden throughout Neo Haven.
