Hello everyone!
This update completely rebuilds Celestial Rift, transforming it from a procedurally generated portal into the largest handcrafted area in Portalborn so far.
Thank you, as always, for the bug reports, suggestions, and patience. Several fixes in this update came directly from players finding things I never would have discovered on my own.
The original Celestial Rift generated a new layout every time you entered. This version has been rebuilt entirely by hand—98 handcrafted rooms across five distinct districts, each with its own architecture, atmosphere, and story.
This new portal features:
Five unique districts: the Arrival District, the Grand Observatory, the Sentinel Bastion, the Celestial Foundry, and the Nexus Core.
Seven rotating quests, with one active each visit. Complete all seven and the cycle returns to the beginning.
A new style of progression. The districts have been torn apart by rifts in space and cannot simply be walked between. Waygates open as your quest advances, and a path home appears once your work there is complete.
A quest-driven boss encounter, along with discoveries hidden throughout every district.
A much greater focus on exploration, atmosphere, and world-building. Nearly every room contains something worth examining, and much of the sanctuary's history is hidden within those discoveries rather than told directly.
If you're interested in Portalborn's world and lore, I encourage you to examine everything you find throughout Celestial Rift. Many of the game's biggest story revelations are hidden there. None of it is required to complete the portal—you can finish every quest without reading a single interaction—but players who enjoy uncovering the world's history will find much more waiting for them.
Completing the full seven-quest cycle rewards a permanent stat point that can be spent however you choose.
Celestial Rift now appears second in the portal list, immediately after Whispering Woods. It represents the direction I want Portalborn's future handcrafted portals to take.
As always, Celestial Rift launches fully translated and fully playable in Simplified Chinese from day one—every room, every quest, every secret, every command, and every interaction.
Building two languages together makes every update take longer. I continue choosing that approach because I don't believe anyone should receive only part of the experience because of the language they play in.
Fixed duplicated enemy names in combat messages.
Some attacks in Dread Catacombs were displaying the enemy's name twice, resulting in messages such as "a Sealbound Remnant the Sealbound Remnant strikes..." This affected both English and Chinese and has now been corrected.
Health totals now display as whole numbers.
After effects such as lifesteal or regeneration, your health could sometimes appear as values like 462.8399999999999 instead of simply 462. Health now displays as a whole number everywhere it appears, including the status panel, the combat display, and the combat log.
Story quest rewards now scale with player level.
Previously, story quests always awarded fixed amounts of experience and gold, causing rewards to become insignificant at higher levels. Rewards now scale with your current level so quests remain worthwhile throughout your adventure.
Dread Catacombs now awards a permanent stat point upon completion.
The portal's final reward has been changed from a fixed Intelligence increase to a freely spendable permanent stat point. Any Intelligence pills you've already earned remain exactly as they were.
Quest-giver reputation now tracks correctly.
Some characters were accidentally storing reputation across multiple internal records. Existing reputation is merged automatically the first time you load after updating.
Celestial Rift is the second portal built using this new handcrafted approach, and the process is already becoming much faster.
Dread Catacombs required building many of the underlying systems before the portal itself could exist. Celestial Rift was able to build on that foundation, allowing almost all of the development time to be spent creating the world itself.
It also gave me the opportunity to lean much further into the multi-stage quest system. Although that system was originally created for future Hero-level content, Celestial Rift uses it throughout the portal, and it will continue to become a standard part of new content going forward.
Even this is only one step toward where I ultimately want Portalborn's quest design to go. My long-term goal is for selected portals to feature much deeper quest chains, with multiple layers of progression, discoveries, and storytelling that unfold over repeated visits.
That is the whole reason for building these systems first. Every new portal now benefits from the groundwork laid by the last one.
My next major focus returns to Hero Classes.
Thank you all, genuinely.
Every bug report, translation correction, suggestion, and review continues to help shape Portalborn into a better game. I hope you enjoy exploring Celestial Rift, and I look forward to showing you what comes next.
