Update 4.5 - The Red Hour

You told us a level 40 could delete a level 12,000 and walk away untouchable. You were right, and the reason turned out to be two genuine bugs and one missing rule. Fixing them became a full rebuild of player-versus-player — and it brought a rebalance of Essences and relics with it.Then we went looking at the numbers underneath everything else, and found that levelling and the gold economy had both quietly come off their curves. Those are rebuilt too — the last section below, and worth your time.

⚔ Why the one-shots happened

When you were attacked, the realm rebuilt your defences from a shortened version of your character. Your raw stats were read — and then your equipment bonuses, bound Essences, Attunements, Mastery, Support Class and Path choices were largely left out of the defender’s maths. In the worst case we measured, someone was defending with one eighteenth of their real Strength. Both sides of a fight are now built from the same complete character — the exact finished numbers your own stat panel shows you. Everything you have earned defends you. Your profile page reads from that same source too, so what others see of you is finally the truth. The second bug was initiative. The faster fighter does strike first — but the old formula was a cliff, so enough Dexterity meant taking the opening blow essentially every time. It now runs on the same bounded curve as the rest of combat: a Dexterity lead is a real, growing advantage that never becomes a certainty.

⚔ And the missing rule: the Mark

Attack another player and you are Marked for one hour. Your dot burns red on the map for the entire realm to see, and while the Mark holds anyone may attack you — at any level, with no protection at all. Your victim’s friends can answer. So can strangers who dislike the look of you.Take five kills within an hour and you go on Rampage: every protection you hold is stripped and you are open prey to everyone until the hour rolls off. The Ward of Respite will not save you. The level bands will not save you. Those bands are now progressive rather than a flat 25 levels — measured from the lower of the two levels, so both fighters read the same rule:1–99: ±25  ·  100–999: ±250  ·  1,000–7,999: ±2,000  ·  8,000+: no limit

◆ The Bounty Board

Wronged and outmatched? Put gold on their head. Post a bounty on any player from 1,000 gold or 100× their level, whichever is greater — it makes them lawfully attackable by anyone, and the killer takes the purse. Claiming a bounty is honest work: it never counts toward your Rampage tally, so a career bounty hunter never becomes the hunted for doing the realm a service.

◆ Essences & Relics Reforged

The ceiling becomes a horizon — and the relics stop exaggerating. The +80% Essence cap was a brick wall: on reaching it, every further Essence you bound did nothing whatsoever. One of you sat at 182% of Defence with a hundred points of stones quietly wasted. It is now a soft cap — full value to 80%, then diminishing returns easing toward +120%, approachable forever but never quite reached. Nothing you bind is wasted again. The honest half: four Tier V Essences used to claim the entire cap. Tiers are now +1 / +3 / +5 / +8 / +12%, so reaching the cap takes roughly seven Tier V stones of one stat — a real chase again. If you invested deeply you gain (the realm’s deepest build climbs 80% → 102%); if you had four to six stones in a stat, that stat drops. We would rather say so plainly than let you find it in your stat panel. Removal is a gamble now (90% at Tier I down to 25% at Tier V) or guaranteed with an Essence Extractor — so surplus stacks can be re-homed.Dungeon and raid relics were advertising power they never delivered — some claimed twenty to forty times ordinary gear, and the engine had been quietly discarding most of it for months. All 443 catalogue pieces and every copy in your hands are now on the honest curve. Your real stat totals move by only 0.2–2.5% (the excess was never being granted), and Ascending a relic works properly again. Relic armour was the exception — never bounded, so it was genuinely real — and is now capped at twelve times ordinary gear, lowering most defence pools by 6–15%. Relics remain 12× the armour and 11–17× the stats of normal gear: still the best equipment in the realm by a wide margin.

⚖ And across the realm

◆ Lifesteal and Manasteal finally work with your kit. They only ever fired on plain weapon swings — every Arte, spell and signature cast returned nothing. Casters were paying for a stat that never triggered. Both now work on Artes and Magic, restoring you up to 75% of your maximum (90% for Death Knights and Necromancers).
◆ Delver’s Edge — dungeon trash is worth killing. Each kill stacks +3% damage up to ten, and the boss pays out +30% EXP and gold when you arrive with a full set.
◆ Gathering nodes live on the land now. The global cooldown that followed you everywhere is gone: every square holds its own node with three charges, regenerating after about a minute. Exhaust a vein and move to the next one — prospecting means something again.
◆ The Smash Shop opens for business — salvage leaves your bag for a proper counter in town.
◆ Fight from the keyboard — on a tile of monsters, 1–9 engages them. Mid-fight the digits stay your hotbar, exactly as before.
◆ Ascendant bonuses are visible at last. They were always working and shown nowhere — your stat panel now displays the combined totals the game actually applies, including Crit, Crit Damage, Arte Damage, Dodge, Cooldowns and MP Cost.
◆ Steam client: the invisible wall that made the game unclickable after signing in is gone, and Hide Chat works there now too.

⚖ Dungeon rewards worth the walk

Seven dungeon bosses were pointing at level 85–90 relics (one at an item that no longer existed at all). The realm refuses to mail you something that far beneath you, so it substituted random gear instead — which is why clearing those bosses filled your mailbox with anonymous helms and boots rather than a prize. All seven now name a proper reward at their own level, each distinct, each keeping the weapon its boss was authored around. The audit turned up three more disappointments, all now closed: two dungeons handed out the same prize; two more gave the same prize for the boss and the Ultimate, so beating the hardest difficulty gave you nothing new; and two rewarded a whip — a weapon one of the realm’s eighteen classes can wield. Five new rewards enter the world: the Hollowfang Dirk, Waylayer Blade, Cryptward Locket, Cinderward Plate and Deepmarch Carapace. The rule behind it is now enforced too: a mailed boss reward is a weapon, a ring or a necklace — body armour keeps its own dedicated source in the boss’s set-piece roll. Ordinary monster and trash loot is unchanged. Nothing was taken from anyone: every replaced item remains in the world and every copy in your hands is untouched.

★ Legendaries were being treated as common gear

Boss Legendary drops were being filed in your bag as Common. The star on the loot banner was real; the tier recorded against the item was not — and rarity drives real numbers, not just colour.A mis-filed Legendary was granting 36% fewer stats every moment it was equipped, was ranked as Common by your auto-collect Loot Filter (so at any threshold above Common it was skipped — and with auto-salvage on, destroyed for common-rate Dust the moment it dropped), and could be swept up by bulk salvage at the “Common only” setting.Three separate faults stacked to cause it; all three are closed, and boss drops of every tier now carry their true rarity. Every Legendary already in the realm has been repaired — 250 items across 77 players, restored to their proper tier with full stats. You need do nothing: check your bag and your equipped gear, because the numbers went up while you were away.

⚖ Levelling & the Economy, Rebuilt

Two curves that had quietly stopped agreeing with each other.Dungeon and raid monsters paid experience that grew with roughly the square of their level, while the experience needed for your next level grows more slowly than that. Below about level 1,000 nobody could tell. Above it the two curves crossed and inverted — and out in the Sky bands a single trash monster was worth more than four levels, with bosses worth over twenty.Experience is now measured against the levelling curve itself, so kills per level holds steady from level 1 to the cap and no future expansion can outrun it. No levels have been taken back from anyone — everything earned under the old curve stands. Alongside it:◆ Momentum goes back to being a catch-up. The ×5 boost applied flat at every level above 300 — including at the very front of the ladder, where there is nothing left to catch. It now holds full strength through level 1,000 and fades to ×1 by 5,000. If you are below 1,000, nothing about your levelling has changed.
◆ Hunting far above your level is bounded. Rewards were priced off the monster’s level, so farming something three times your own paid three times as much. It still pays more — just capped at 1.25× your own level.
◆ The last levels ask more. A level now costs double every 10,000 levels. Below 10,000 nothing changes; beyond it, each band should feel like a summit rather than a formality.
◆ Ultimate is harder — and stops inflating levels. Choosing a harder difficulty multiplied the level of everything inside by up to ×2.8, so a level-appropriate Ultimate run spawned level 32,200 monsters inside a dungeon built for the eleven-thousands, and paid several times more automatically. Difficulty now scales the stat line instead and monsters stay in the dungeon’s own band. An Ultimate boss hits about eleven times as hard as its Normal counterpart — genuinely the hardest thing in the game, rather than merely the highest number.

◆ And the gold

Experience has always had one dial every kill is measured against. Gold never did — each kind of content carried hand-written values that had drifted apart over years. The clearest case: a raid monster at level 12,000 paid 959 gold, while an overworld monster of the same level paid 152,282. Raids are the hardest group content in the game and were paying essentially nothing. All content now shares one gold curve, anchored so the overworld rate is unchanged — it is the yardstick everything else is measured against. Raids come up to par with a premium on top; dungeon bosses, which had drifted far above everything, come back down to theirs.◆ Legendary and Unique gear is finally worth what it should be. Rarity for ordinary gear was worked out from its value, so Uncommon through Epic sat correctly on the price curve — but Legendary, Unique and Dark Crystal pieces are awarded by their source, and their prices were written by hand and never brought onto it. At around level 10,500 an Epic was worth 249 million while a Unique of the same level was worth 640 thousand. Two thousand items across the catalogue and every bag in the realm have been re-valued. Unique now sits above Legendary, above Epic, above Rare — as it always should have.
◆ Vendors pay less for high-level gear. Selling loot was by a wide margin the largest source of gold in the game — one endgame bag was worth more than ten thousand monster kills. The flat 15% now tapers with the item’s level: 15% up to Lv500, 12.6% at Lv2,500, 9.6% at Lv5,000, and 6% from Lv8,000. It was deliberately not cut across the board — the problem lives at the top of the game. Below level 500 nothing changes at all.
◆ Ascension costs scale with rarity and level. Improving gear cost the same whether it was a Common or a Dark Crystal relic, and each tier cost a flat step more than the last — so the +7 to +10 push, the hardest part, was the cheapest in real terms. Cost now climbs sharply per tier and with rarity: a Unique costs six times what the same-level Common does. Your best pieces are meant to be a project.

★ The Regalia — somewhere to spend a fortune

Past roughly level 3,000, gold simply accumulated. There was nothing left to buy — the entire cosmetics catalogue cost under five million, which at the top of the ladder is a rounding error. The Curio of Vanities now stocks the Regalia: four sprite skins (Obsidian, Aurum, Voidwrought, Astral), three auras (Sovereign’s Corona, Eclipse Halo, Firstlight), four prestige nameplate flairs — and for the first time, titles you can simply buy: of Considerable Means, the Gilded, Coinlord and Who Bought the Sky.Every piece is purely cosmetic and every piece is level-gated. Bought titles sit alongside your earned ones in the usual picker — and they are worded so nobody will ever mistake one for an achievement. Every other title in Crystaria remains earned. Clearing out the whole collection runs a little over eleven billion gold. Good luck.
