Demo Update 1.3

Another update for the demo, and this one came almost entirely from your reports. The theme this time is the same thing many of you said in different ways: the game was not explaining itself. Happiness that moved for no visible reason, reputation nobody could work out, fees in the daily summary for things you never did. Here is what changed.

Seeing what your tenants actually feel

  • Every opinion and unmet requirement now shows its happiness value, so a small annoyance no longer looks like a crisis.

  • Temporary effects from events show how many days they have left, so you can tell a passing mood from a permanent one.

  • Your staff now appear in a tenant's panel, so you can see when the cleaner, porter or security guard is keeping them happy.

  • Tenants tell you when they form a new opinion about a neighbour. Those feelings grow over time, so a mood could shift days after move-in with nothing on screen to explain it.

  • Delayed results from an event now name the event behind them instead of showing up as a nameless Event.

Reputation, finally explained

  • Upgrades now show the reputation they earn next to their price. Upgrades are the main way your reputation grows, so that number needed to be on the button.

  • Hover the reputation bar for your exact score out of 100, what reputation actually does for you, and how far you are from the next milestone.

  • Event choices now list everything they take and everything they give back. Only the first effect used to be shown, so reputation you stood to gain was hidden behind a button that looked like it only cost money.

The daily summary now adds up

  • Security deposits were being counted as rent, which made your income look bigger than it was. Deposits taken and deposits refunded have their own lines now.

  • The agent's commission was listed as Kick Fee, so you seemed to be paying eviction penalties for tenants you never evicted. It has its own Broker Fee line.

  • Moving a tenant to another flat was also listed as Kick Fee. That is now Relocation Fee.

  • The eviction confirmation did not show that the deposit refund comes out of your pocket too. The fee and the refund both show a minus sign now.

Fixed

  • A tenant could be thrown out, and their deposit charged to you, when a completely different tenant's contract ran out. This could happen after moving or swapping tenants between flats.

  • Dragging a box or a tenant while the game lost focus, by alt-tabbing or opening the Steam overlay, could leave the box stuck in mid-air or the building unresponsive to the mouse. Both now cancel cleanly, with nothing charged.

  • Happiness readings could show values outside the bar's range.

  • Neighbour disputes put a happiness number on the choice button that only covered one of the two tenants, so an option that upset someone could read as a gain. Hover a choice to see what it does to each of them.

  • The Full House message appeared while you still had empty flats and stayed on screen after a tenant moved out. It now clears itself when a flat frees up.

  • The tutorial had a rough time on widescreen and ultrawide displays. Arrows pointed at the wrong button or off the screen entirely, several steps had no arrow at all, and pop-ups drifted away from the arrow they belonged to or jumped around when the window was resized. All of it has been rebuilt to stay put at any resolution.
