Did you know... Episode 4.

Shadowforge · published

This tutorial demonstrates how to use Symmetrical Drawing Mode in Shadowforge to create perfectly mirrored artwork.

What Symmetrical Drawing Does

When symmetry is enabled, every stroke you draw on one side of the canvas is automatically mirrored on the opposite side. This is useful for:

  • Character faces

  • Masks

  • Creatures

  • Weapons

  • Decorative patterns

  • Pixel art and concept sketches

Step 1: Enable Symmetry

  1. Open a canvas.

  2. Turn on Symmetrical Drawing (CTRL + J).

  3. The center line becomes the axis that all strokes are mirrored across.

Step 2: Draw on One Side

In the video, the artist draws half of a decorative shape on the left side.

As soon as the stroke is completed, Shadowforge automatically creates the matching stroke on the right side, producing a perfectly symmetrical design.

Step 3: Create Artwork Faster

The tutorial demonstrates drawing a heart:

  1. Draw one side of the heart.

  2. The opposite side appears automatically.

  3. Fill the shape with color.

Because both sides stay synchronized, complex symmetrical artwork takes roughly half the effort.

Step 4: Coloring Works Normally

After drawing the outline:

  1. Select a color.

  2. Use the fill or paint tools as usual.

  3. The artwork remains symmetrical while preserving clean edges.

The tutorial shows the heart being filled with a bright red color.

Step 5: Use Symmetry for Faces

Near the end of the video, the artist sketches a simple face:

  • One eye is drawn and mirrored.

  • Facial curves are mirrored automatically.

  • The mouth is centered beneath the mirrored features.

This demonstrates how symmetry can quickly create balanced character designs.

Tips

  • Start with symmetry enabled when creating faces or creatures.

  • Draw only one side whenever possible.

  • Use the center line as a guide for placement.

  • Turn symmetry off afterward if you want to add unique details to each side.

Result

Using Symmetrical Drawing in Shadowforge allows you to create clean, balanced artwork much faster by automatically mirroring every brush stroke across the canvas center line. It's especially useful for character design, icons, logos, and decorative artwork.
