Civilization Cultures!

Civilizations will now create and develop their own cultures based on their early background or colonial origins.

Cultures develop additional traits over time, providing unique modifiers to civilizations. A culture can spread beyond the borders of a single civilization, and sometimes even outlive the civilization that gave birth to it.

Cultures

  • Added a new Culture system. Civilizations can now consist of multiple distinct cultures instead of behaving as culturally uniform populations.

  • Every civilization begins with a founding culture connected to its origin world and founding civilization.

  • Cultures can spread between worlds through migration and colonization, preserving the cultural composition of moving populations.

  • The same culture can now exist across multiple planets and even multiple civilizations.

  • Each planet tracks its own cultural composition and dominant culture.

  • Each civilization also determines its dominant culture from the combined population of its cultures across all controlled worlds.

  • Culture bonuses now scale proportionally with the population share of cultures carrying a given trait instead of being granted only by the dominant culture.

  • Cultures remain persistent even if their original civilization disappears.

Culture Traits

  • Added cultural traits that provide gameplay modifiers to civilizations and planets.

  • Cultures can evolve and acquire additional traits over time.

  • A culture can currently develop up to three traits.

  • Cultural development is based on a combination of culture age and total population.

  • Age and population contribute independently to development, allowing both very old smaller cultures and rapidly growing cultures to continue evolving.

  • Culture population used for development is combined across every world and civilization where that culture exists.

  • A culture that has spread into several civilizations still develops as one shared culture and receives the same newly evolved trait everywhere it exists.

  • Development progress bars show the current percentage toward the next cultural trait.

Other and bugfixes

  • Added Ecological Stewardship technology and Nature Park building, preserving natural terrain while improving planetary Happiness with additional bonuses from adjacent parks.

  • Improved civilization crisis presentation with individual risk progress bars.

  • Surface inspiration targeting no longer changes the currently selected tile.
