THE MIDNIGHT CHRONICLE - Issue #04

1666: Amsterdam · published 41 days ago

Hello everyone, and welcome back to The Midnight Chronicle. This full moon edition belongs to Noa and Aaron: the second gameplay feature, the voices behind them, and a few updates from the studio.

MAKING THE COVER

Noa and Aaron just landed on the cover of Edge 426, with unique variations for retail and subscriber editions. Inside, the team talks witchery, cats, and shutting down a deal with the devil on the game's long road to revival.

Two Characters, Two Centuries, One Mission

In this second gameplay features video, co-founder and executive producer Jean-François Boivin introduces Noa and Aaron, the two central characters of 1666: Amsterdam.

This is not a coincidence. This is a thread pulling two eras together.

BEHIND THE SHADOWS

This cycle, we hand the mic to the people who gave Noa and Aaron their voices.

Victoria Diamond - Playing Noa

What was your first reaction when you read for Noa for the first time?

I had no idea what was going on because we had very little information. But she seemed like a really cool character, especially because she seemed pretty badass and very determined. Also, the graphics and the picture that I saw looked really interesting. So, I was mostly intrigued, but I didn't have a lot of information then.

Now that you know her, what's the most fun and challenging part of bringing this character to life?

The fun part is playing a witch. That's really cool. I love being immersed in the world and being able to cast spells. Also being in the whole historical context of Amsterdam is really interesting. I'm learning a lot and it's just a really enjoyable world to be in.

The most challenging thing is the Mid-Atlantic accent because it's kind of in between British and American. Keeping it consistent is challenging as it is not natural to me.

Without spoiling anything, how would you describe your character in three words?

Relentless

Powerful

Stoic

What do you hope players feel when they meet Noa?

I hope that they feel empowered by her... like playing through her, seeing the world through her eyes. I hope they feel intrigued and impressed by her. She's pretty impressive.

Xiao Yi Hernan - Playing Aaron

What was your first reaction when you read for Aaron for the first time?

I thought it was fun. It wasn't a character I was used to because he was a father and everything. But the fact that he was from Montreal and he came from a mixed background, I said, hey, it would be really fun if I could do that because it's very real to what my life is. So... I viewed it that way.

What's the most fun and challenging part of bringing this character to life?

The most fun is that I'm able to be quirky and have my little funny jokes, which is always fun. I think it's always fun to do that, which is a big contrast to Noa's character. The challenging part is to try and make Aaron feel real and not as just a slapstick character, but actually someone who has depth and stresses out, and has things that are important to him that matter.

Without spoiling anything how would you describe your character in three words?

Three words, I would say : passionate, educated, and curious.

What do you hope players feel when they meet Aaron?

I hope they like him! I hope they like him and that they find that they can relate to Aaron in a way, without spoiling what happens to him. But, yeah, I hope that they see themselves in Aaron and that he feels real to them.

FROM THE STUDIO

We've been debugging for weeks now. The narrative team also went back into the recording booth.

As you may have seen on our socials, four of us headed to Amsterdam for a press preview event with a group of influencers and the press.

Streets, stories, and a first look at the game after the intro.

Keep an ear out. You'll probably hear about it before we say a word.

WHAT LIES AHEAD

Next cycle, we return with what's currently our last planned Gameplay Feature 3, around the day and night mechanic of 1666: Amsterdam.

Thank you for being here. See you at the next new moon.

FROM THE ARCHIVE

There is always something circling overhead. You cannot tell if it follows you, or if you are walking into its path. Our destiny has a way of finding us.
