Devlog #5 — Building Rails in Real Time

Hi everyone,

The railway editor has taken a big step forward.

Rails can now be previewed, edited and updated in real time using a cleaner spline-based system.

A cleaner system

We tested several ways of generating rail pieces, including separate logic for straight rails, curves and more advanced shapes.

That worked for early testing, but it was becoming too complex.

So we simplified the RailEditor into one unified spline-based system.

This makes the editor easier to expand and gives us a better foundation for future rail pieces.

Preview and editing

The preview system is now becoming central to the editor.

Before placing a rail, we can see what the next piece will look like. After placing it, the selected rail can also be updated and adjusted.

This is the direction we want for the editor:

Change a value.
See the result.
Confirm the piece.
Keep building.

Early snapping

We are also improving snapping and alignment between rail pieces.

Two rail ends being close is not enough. They also need to connect in a way that makes sense for the track.

There is still a lot to do: final meshes, sleepers, save/load, Workshop integration and gameplay train movement.

But the foundation is getting stronger.

This is another step toward the core idea of Speed Rivals: Model Trains:

building your own model railway layouts.

Thanks for following the development.

Until now, most of the updates have focused on the editor, rail placement, missions, Jeff and Steam Workshop support.
