The forge has been hot since 1.3 came out, and we are back with more modding updates, and more requests filled! Now you can build your own:

Map

The map creator that we used internally has been updated and folded into the main game. Our internal tool is now completely gone, completely obsoleted by the new tool, so everyone has exactly the same tools now.

You can edit all 7 map layers: terrain, walls, overlays, objects, nodes, lights. In addition, there's keyboard/mouse controls, a camera with up to a 3x zoom, paginated per-layer tiles you can deploy, and hover tooltips for everything. There's also a helper for organizing teleport nodes, so you can do things like link the Command deck to the Underworks the way the vanilla game does.

Custodian

We've modularized making your own Custodian into its own assisted screen in game.

With a dead-simple interface, you can now set up a fully custom, playable robot that has its own name, model, starting parts, reliability, speed, and description. You can also set up its sprite set, define new or reuse existing personality tags, and set up your Custodian's perk loadout. It even has a place for helping you define new perks, if you don't want to reuse existing ones!

Be aware: Custodian data is still pulled in when the game launches, so a newly created Custodian won't be ready for a new game launch until you close and reopen the game!

Spritesheet (and more!)

Mods can now override and add game content, not just run scripts in our pre-defined hooks. Maps, terrain, objects, nodes, and lights now have an established and specific hierarchy: An enabled mod's assets beat your own save-directory edits, which in turn beats the base game. This allows us to make good on a request made a few versions back: The old sprite sheet is now available as a Workshop mod. If you preferred the classic look, simply pop in that official mod (you can find it HERE), and away you go!

Mod!

But what good are all these new toys if you can't package them up and share them? Wouldn't it be great if you had something that made it easy to upload your work to Steam Workshop, or style it for distribution elsewhere? Well, we thought so, too!

The UI helps you quickly and easily define your mod's basics, like name, description, author, mod version, and it's target game version.

Don't be afraid to pop by the Discord to share what you've done, or talk with others about ideas. We see this as a big delivery on our request to do anything you want with our game, and we'd love to see where your mind goes. Our only request now, as it was when we released it: Never make us boring. ːwinter2019coolyulː

Major update31 Jul 2026Patch 1.3 is here! One benefit to the unbearable heat of summer is that it gives you a lot of reasons to stay inside. And as it turns out, when you stay inside and you are not constantly harassed by between two and four horsemen of the apocalypse, you get a lot of thinking done. And it turns out, thinking gives you lots of ideas. Circle up, Custodians. A number of truly unhinged ideas are coming in hot, and you a…Major update26 Apr 2026Patch 1.2 - Darker Still Full ReleaseAfter a lengthy beta process that ended up even more lengthy due to more personal turmoil, what is probably our largest update ever, including 1.0, is now live. Let's go over some of the changes - there's a LOT, so forgive us for moving quick on each thing! New graphics The most obvious thing you will notice is that every tile in the game has been redone. Our own newness to game making meant th…News19 Dec 2025The 1.2 (Darker Still) Beta is now available on steamEngineers - Eyes and ears! As most of you are probably aware, we read every SINGLE review that comes through. Fundamentally, we think that if you have taken the time to put down your sincere thoughts for the game we've made, you deserve the time it takes for us to absorb it. Even in the positive reviews, there are often really important criticisms that we can extract to make the game better. An…
