0.31 — In Your Language

Until now, Game of Mods spoke English and nothing else. This update teaches it four more languages — on the screen, in your ear, and in the mouths of the people you meet. Everything still runs on your own machine.

The game reads in your language

Every menu, setting, prompt, and dialog now comes in German, Spanish, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese, alongside English. The game follows your Mac's language by default. If you'd rather play in a different one, there's a Language section in Settings; pick one, and it applies the next time you launch.

The people in it speak it

This is the part we care about most. Choose a language and the characters answer you in it. They hear you in it too — talk to them out loud in Spanish and they reply in Spanish, in a Spanish voice. The narrator, the guide who walks you in, and the game master on the pause screen all follow. So do the things you say to the game itself: "spiel First Steps", "設定", "我要玩 Soft Fork".

One honest note. For a language to work fully, your Mac needs two things it may not have yet: on-device dictation for that language, and an installed voice for it. Both are free from Apple and take a minute to add. If either is missing, the Language picker says exactly which one, and where to get it, instead of letting you pick something that would sit there silent.

The translations are ours, and the characters' replies are generated on your machine, so both can be off. If a phrase reads wrong to a native speaker, we'd like to hear about it.

For builders

Synthesized avatars can now be styled anime or kemono, and their appearance edited piece by piece from the authoring tools, with the Construct preview updating as you go. The authoring tools also got tighter schemas and clearer errors when something doesn't validate.

A note on what this is

Game of Mods is being built in the open, and this is still early. Characters can ramble, in any language. If something feels wrong, say so on the discussions board — the person who wrote the code reads it.

Thank you for being here this early.

This one is about the game getting out of the way: a guide who walks you in, stories that let their people speak for themselves, and minds that answer faster. Nothing is sent anywhere, nothing needs an account, and none of it needs an internet connection. This update is about making those minds easy to reach. Just talk to people Walk into a scene and say something — out loud, or by typing into the field at the bottom of the screen. Whoever you're near will answer you…
