Hello everyone!
We're going to talk about all the things (finished or still wip) that we went through during the past month.
We’ve been working and re-working many different things at once, and we have quite a few updates to share with you all! There is a contest announcement at the end of this post!
Make sure to not miss the chance of creating your own original Pemkie that will be made playable in game!
Encounters are a huge part of each journey and we want to try and make every encounter feel distinct, so we’ve now added and refined the first 4 battle maps of the game that will be available in the Coralia Bay biome.
The Intro & Tutorial Maps:
Built to ease you into the world and teach you the gameplay in a cozy, welcoming setting.
The Forest & Pond Maps:
These will be the first maps you see when starting your adventure!
Each has its own unique set of Pemkies you can encounter and eventually catch!
Also, here's a sneak peek of what the start of the game is looking right now!
It's still wip, so some stuff might change, but we think we're close to a quite suggestive scene.
Every great adventure needs a protagonist, so we have implemented our basic Trainer Character model!
Right now, they’ll be sporting a default look while we focus on core gameplay mechanics.
But don't get too attached to this exact look as we are planning a full customization feature down the road so you can truly make the trainer your own!
The island population is growing! We are currently working on our very first main NPC: The Merchant. They’ll be your go-to source for supplies on every new adventure.
This is only our first iteration, but that beard already holds a lot of character here!
Then, to test our questing system, we’ve also added our very first test quest involving some local wildlife.
The island's courriers, the Pegulls (those pesky birds!), have gone and lost a bunch of mail. It’ll be up to you to track down the missing letters scattered around and return them safely to their rightful owner.
It’s a small step, but it lays the groundwork for some awesome narrative quests in the future!
It wouldn't be a Pemkie Island update without some new creatures! Give a warm, rhythmic welcome to our two newest Pemkies: Ribeat and Rabbasst!
These two are frog-inspired Pemkies who are all about music and sound, we can't wait for you to add these musical amphibians to your team!
We want Pemkie Island to feel cohesive and polished from the main menu to the deepest parts of its biomes.
UI Fresh Paint: We’ve begun a massive overhaul of the user interface. Our goal is to make menus, health bars, and text feel seamlessly integrated into the game's overall aesthetic and environments. It's still a long way to go, but with the new addition of the shader graph into unity 6.4, we feel like a lot of funny experiments can be made in the different tabs of the game!
Crunchy Footsteps: Our SFX artist just finished creating a whole library of movement sounds! We are currently testing and implementing a brand-new footstep VFX and sound system. Soon, walking through grass, dirt, or shallow water will sound and look exactly as satisfying as it should.
We’re going to keep polishing the UI, finalizing the footstep audio integration, breathing even more life into the Merchant's model and add at least another couple of NPCs.
We're also going to host a contest starting TODAY and that will be up until June 14th, to add one of the YOUR designed Pemkies to the game. Follow our subreddit r/pemkieisland or join over at Discord, read the rules!! and drop your concept. After June 14th we will make a poll and declare the first Community Chosen Pemkie!
Good luck with it!
Thank you all so much for following our development journey! If you haven't already, please make sure to Wishlist Pemkie Island on Steam, it helps us out immensely!
Until next time, The Pemkie Island Dev Team.
