From Tactical Realism to Immersive Roleplaying

Many players know our team from Zero Hour, where we focused heavily on tactical gameplay and realistic combat. While Blackwood still carries the tactical aspect, we're taking things in a different direction by combining it with immersive roleplaying.

Our goal is to create an experience that doesn't begin and end with a mission. In Blackwood, there is a life outside of contracts. Managing your equipment, earning money, customizing your spaces, and preparing for future jobs are all part of the experience. We want players to feel like they're living the life of a professional contract killer, not just completing missions one after another.

Your Apartment Is More Than a Safehouse

In Blackwood, the apartment serves as your home base. Rather than functioning as a simple menu, it's a physical space where you can manage equipment, prepare for future contracts, receive deliveries, and interact with the surroundings to unwind between jobs. Items purchased online don't instantly appear in your inventory. Deliveries take time to arrive, and you'll need to collect them when they show up. You can also pay extra for express delivery and receive the order the same day. Small details like this help make the world feel more realistic and connected. As you progress, you'll also be able to customize your DVD store and basement, allowing your personal spaces to evolve alongside your journey. Whether it's improving the look of your business or expanding your operational setup, these areas become a reflection of your choices and playstyle.

A More Meaningful Economy

Money in Blackwood serves more than one purpose. The game features two separate currencies that represent different aspects of your life. One is tied to personal wealth and lifestyle expenses, while the other focuses on operational upgrades and professional growth. This separation creates more meaningful choices. Spending money on yourself may mean delaying an upgrade. Investing heavily in your work may come at the cost of your personal lifestyle. Managing resources becomes part of the roleplaying experience.

Weapon Ownership

Weapons in Blackwood are treated as personal assets and not just disposable tools. You can own multiple copies of the same weapon platform, and each firearm can maintain its own configuration and modifications. Rather than constantly replacing equipment, players can build collections of specialized weapons designed for different situations. Over time, these weapons become familiar tools that players grow attached to rather than temporary inventory items.

Building the Perfect Weapon

Weapon customization plays a major role in this game.

Our highly modular weapon modification system allows players to replace, upgrade, reuse, and trade individual components across compatible firearms. Attachments can be acquired through various means, and players are encouraged to experiment with different setups to create weapons that suit their preferred playstyle.

Whether you're optimizing an existing favorite or assembling something entirely new, the system offers a wide range of customization options. It encourages experimentation and rewards players who learn the strengths and value of different weapon components.

The Black Market

The black market forms a key part of Blackwood's progression loop. Instead of simply purchasing complete firearms, players can search for bargains, acquiring damaged weapons at a discount, harvesting valuable parts, and reusing components to create new builds. Sometimes the best purchase isn't a perfect weapon, but a broken one that contains exactly the part you need. This system opens up additional opportunities to customize weapons, save money, and generate profit through salvaging and resale.

Preparation Matters

Before heading out on a contract, players need to make sure they have the right equipment for the job. Weapons require compatible ammunition, and selecting the right loadout can make a major difference once a mission begins.  This preparation phase is intended to make players think like professionals, reinforcing the feeling that every contract begins long before the first shot is fired.

Immersion Through Interaction

Many actions in Blackwood are supported by dedicated animations rather than instant menu interactions. Installing weapon components, managing equipment, and preparing weapons all take place within the world itself. These interactions help make customization feel more physical and rewarding.

Looking Ahead

The core aim of Blackwood is to blend tactical realism with immersive roleplaying.

Rather than simply creating another shooter, we're building a world where players can experience the life of a professional contract killer. From managing equipment and finances to preparing for contracts and taking time to unwind between missions, the experience is much more than combat alone. Every system, from the apartment and DVD store to weapon customization and the black market, is designed to make players feel connected to the world they inhabit. We're excited to share more as development continues, and we look forward to showing you what comes next.
