Patch #20: Merchant, Screens, Balancing & more QoL

Hey, everybody.

This is a patch focusing on QoL, fixes, balancing, and last but not least: a very cool Merchant update!

Jack of All Trades:

We've improved the Merchant event to give you more agency. Those are simple changes, but that can make the event much more interesting.

  • You can now re-roll the type of merchant you're buying cards from. There is a re-roll button below the Merchant's name. The shop type re-roll prices are persistent, like decrees.

  • The Merchant is now called Jack of All Trades!

  • There are 3 Merchant types: Jack of Arms (Troops), ack of Structures (Buildings/Towers), Jack of Magic (Tomes/Enchantments). *In case you haven't noticed, there were always three types of shops in the game. We just thought it'd be a good a ideia to make this more clear to players.

QoL:

We're also bringing several QoL requests from the community to the game:

  • You can now see your current perks during a run. You can access the screen through the pause screen or by pressing the hotkey "K"

  • You can now access the Compendium from the main menu.

  • Added an "Extras" section in the main menu, consolidating Achievements, Credits, and Compendium.

  • You can now skip the Diplomat text by clicking.

  • Cards in your hand will no longer remain selected after you move your cursor away.

  • Improved UI scaling on Steamdeck.

  • Trying to Regress a level 1 plot will now display a fail pop-up.

  • All melee troops have a wider attack area (to improve battlefield distribution)

  • Imps are now better distributed during battle.

  • Cemetery spawning pathfinding was improved.

Balancing:

We're super stoked about your feedback on Quest Mode. It's only the start! And of course, there's a lot to finesse. In this patch, we're addressing the core points of your early feedback, especially regarding balancing and bugs.

Overall:

  • Destroying a Scapegoat plot will now give you the proportional money (they died one last time, after all!)

  • Traveling back in time to a year before a blessing event will now make the blessing trigger one more time.

  • Decrees now trigger Orbiter's chain effect.

  • Orbiter now has slightly more HP and faster attacks.

  • Defender now reflects Champion of Nature's attacks.

  • Paladins now move faster.

  • Time enemy troops now have a little less damage.

  • Decreased King of Nomads Champion damage.

Quests:

  • Fugitive: you now start with more gold and we slowed down enemy scaling.

  • Fugitive (pt. 2): when you make peace with all enemy kings on Fugitive quest, since there's no rebellion, you now break the time continuum and get warped to year -1.

  • Rite: the challenge is now more fun (you start with more interesting plots to destroy)

  • Spells Revolt: fixed the quest's calendar (it was following the old system)

  • Slaughterhouse: your Manglers now start with a damage boost.

  • Futurists: you now start with less gold.

  • Stone & Time Revolts: enemy scaling is now a bit less steep.

  • Blitz: you now start with more cards & a stronger Bastion.

  • Time, Nothing & Stone Total War: enemy is scaling is now a bit less steep.

  • Coin Age: enemy is scaling is now a bit less steep.

  • Necropolis, Beacon Valley, Infertility & Farmland: fixed random battles with kings that are not your enemies.

Fixes:

  • Quests will now properly give you XP when you lose during endless mode.

  • Quests will now show the "Quest complete" screen when you lose during endless mode.

  • Added a couple of missing cards to Merchant events.

  • Echoform will now duplicate plot's movement speed as well.

  • Oddity decree no longer will wrongly give you Warlord cards.

  • Eyeglass decree pop-up now only shows up on plots that actually have critical stats.

  • Echoform no longer wrongly duplicates Paladin's HP buff.

  • King of Time scenario's floating blocks will no longer occasionally disappear during battle.

  • Fixed a Broken Gacha bug where, if it was the last played card in a year, it wouldn't be recognized as a proper move and wouldn't trigger the subsequent battle event.

  • "Back" button on perk screen is now properly localized.

  • Time & Progress bases now float in the world map as intended.

  • Fixed a bug where Warlord (Nomads) wouldn't work with Embalmed (Blood) units, when you used Multiculturalism.

  • Fixed small gap in Greed's scenario.

  • Fixed a bug that occasionally caused a soft lock on expansion events (Steamdeck & Remote play users). Please keep us posted on this, as it's a tricky bug to reproduce!

We'll stay on the lookout and will keep balancing things to make sure everyone has fun. We'll keep improving Quest Mode as well as everything else in 9 Kings.

After downloading the patch, please start a new run, as your previous run won’t have the updates stored and they may cause conflicts. If you experience any issues, please email us at [email protected].

What's next?

Yes, we're working on the infamous ranked mode. If we're being honest, this game mode has the potential to elevate 9 Kings like never before if we do things right. It will take a minute, so please bear with us! In the meantime, we're also gonna bring new cards & systems, and we're working hard to improve the performance of the game and making sure it's more uncrashable than ever, regardless of how much you push the limit (yes, we're looking at you, Colorfoe players!!!).

Anyway: new cards, new decrees, controller support, more balancing... it's all on our list. Stay tuned.
