Arrows and Aiming: Damage Zones

Greetings, warriors!

Not every arrow strikes with the same force. In Shadow of the Road, ranged combat is governed by Damage Zones - a system that makes positioning and distance just as important as going first.

Every ranged weapon has an Attack Distance, divided into two distinct range bands:

Close – the optimal range, limited by the dotted line on the combat grid. Shots landed here are most effective.

Far – the extended range, beyond the dotted line on the combat grid. Attacks that connect to far targets lose a portion of their power.

The battlefield grid highlights these Damage Zones dynamically, letting you judge at a glance whether you’re striking at full strength. It is of some note, that targets outside of your Attack Distance cannot be hit.

What's the difference?

Inside the Close range all ranged attacks strike with deadly precision and inflict their full damage.

Attacks will still connect with the targets in the Far range, but will have their damage output reduced by 25% - especially noticeable on Critical Hits, which makes the bow-wielding Akira very sad. Sometimes, the difference is enough to decide between a KO and a target left standing.

Tradition vs Progress

Most Bows have their Attack Distance split 50%/50% between Close and Far Damage Zones, while most Guns keep their effectiveness further into long ranges, and have a 75%/25% ratio. Hooray for progress?

Why do Witches cackle?

Because not all attacks are bound by these rules. Magical abilities are only limited by their Attack Distance and ignore Damage Zones entirely, remaining effective across the battlefield. Where an arrow weakens over distance, a spell hits with the same force no matter how far it flies!

In the right place, at the right time

The Damage Zone system rewards tactical awareness - not just who you target, but also where you stand, and when you move: do you move your fighter closer and take full damage, or do you delay and take a weakened extreme range shot first?

While a misplaced step can put you into the Close range of an enemy marksman, a clever shove can force that same marksman into reduced damage on your back line. Fighters like Ishida can displace enemies, changing the math of shots fired.

Adapt to the shifting lines of the battlefield to excel at combat in Shadow of the Road: weigh risks against rewards, plan your moves two steps ahead, and strike from the distance that suits your tactics best.
