Two major passes in one release. The headline: we did a full end-to-end analysis of the online player experience, from live combat telemetry down to the math of the resurrection economy, and fixed what it found. The second pass makes the NPC population meaningfully smarter about staying alive and spending its time. Full technical details live in the repo release notes; here is what changes for you.
The numbers said something interesting: combat was never too hard. Win rates are 97 to 99 percent in every level band. But almost nobody was getting past level 40, and the reason was math, not skill. Online characters had 3 lifetime resurrections that never regenerated, and the journey from level 20 to 40 is roughly 900 fights at about a 1 percent death risk per fight. Expected deaths over that journey: 6 to 10. Lives available: 3. Every character was mathematically guaranteed to run out, and the deaths themselves were almost all one-round damage spikes with no counterplay. This release fixes the economy, the spikes, and the visibility.
Permadeath is still real: run out of lives and die, and your character is gone. But careful players can now stay ahead of the reaper indefinitely, and a bad night is a gold problem, not a funeral.
Single-player is unchanged. It never used the resurrection counter and keeps its own death system.
Telemetry showed that real player deaths were almost never a slow grind down. They were single-round bursts of 100 to 140 percent of max HP, usually from a boss right after its opening restraint wears off. The existing Last Stand rule (start a round above half health and no single round can kill you) expired at exactly the wrong moment, because attrition had already pulled players below half before the burst landed.
New rule: once per combat, a killing blow against a player who started the round above 25 percent max HP leaves them at 1 HP instead, and the fight ends with them alive. You stagger out, heal up, and decide your own next move. The guarantee is spent for that combat, so it is a second chance, not immunity. Fighting on from below 25 percent is still the calculated risk it always was, and attrition difficulty is completely unchanged. Death's Door does not apply on Nightmare difficulty, in PvP, or in exhibition combat like the Gauntlet and the Tournament of Honor, where the arena stakes are the whole point.
The second pass came from a deep dive into roughly 331,000 logged NPC decisions over two weeks. Highlights:
If you play with the world simulation running, expect the town to feel less suicidal and more purposeful: fewer news-feed strings of NPC dungeon deaths, more NPCs actually progressing.
All new text in this release (Death's Door, the Rite of Return, danger ratings, the lives display, and the rest) ships in all five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Hungarian.
Over the next few weeks we will be tracking level-40+ crossings, involuntary character deletions, and how many players are sitting at low lives. If you have been hovering near zero resurrections and playing scared, this release is for you: level up or visit the Temple, get your lives back, and go push a floor you have been avoiding.
