MISFORTUNATE Playtest v0.3.6 Alpha - Board, Shops & Multiplayer Update

15 August 2026

Another sizeable Alpha update is now here!

v0.3.6 Alpha focuses heavily on improving the moment-to-moment flow of matches, cleaning up board interactions, repairing the player Shop experience, strengthening Steam multiplayer rejoining, and continuing to polish several gameplay systems.

Thank you to everyone testing MISFORTUNATE and helping us find the rough edges while we continue pushing toward a more polished experience.

🛒 Shop Popup Overhaul & Purchase Fixes

The player Shop popup that appears when landing on a Shop has been restored to its more practical grid-based layout.

  • Shop items are once again displayed in a grid view.
  • Players can scroll vertically through the available inventory.
  • Purchase availability has been corrected so valid items should no longer incorrectly appear greyed out or unavailable.
  • General Shop purchasing behaviour has been cleaned up and corrected.
  • The separate Shop Board Modal remains unchanged.

Shopping should now be considerably easier to browse and use during a match.

🗺️ Improved Board Interactions

We've continued moving important interactions into the central Board Modal system.

  • Toll payments are now handled through the Board Modal.
  • Closing an actionable Board Modal no longer means losing access to the interaction.
  • Players can click the relevant board tile again to reopen interactions when appropriate.
  • This includes interactions such as purchasing a Unit after landing on it.
  • The Board Modal can now be dragged and repositioned, making it easier to see the board while making decisions.

This should make board interactions feel much less restrictive, particularly when players want to inspect the board before committing to an action.

💎 Crystals Can Now Be Crafted

Crystals have been added to the crafting system.

Players can now craft:

1 Crystal = 3 Totems

Crystals are also now displayed as a dedicated currency within the Player HUD alongside the player's other resources.

This gives players much clearer visibility over their available Crystals and introduces another strategic use for accumulated Totems.

🎲 Smoother Extra Rolls & Turn Flow

We've removed some unnecessary confirmation prompts around additional rolls.

When a mechanic grants another roll - including rolling doubles - players are no longer repeatedly asked whether they want to ROLL AGAIN or DON'T ROLL AGAIN.

Instead:

  • The dice become available again.
  • The dice receive a green glow to clearly communicate that another roll is available.
  • Where appropriate, players may choose to Rest instead.
  • Players beginning a normal turn will no longer incorrectly have the REST option available before taking their initial action.

The goal is to reduce interruptions and keep turns moving naturally.

⚔️ Turn Order War Improvements

Turn Order War bidding has received another adjustment.

When increasing a bid, players will now bid:

5 Tokens more than the current highest bid.

This makes bid progression more predictable and keeps the Turn Order War moving without unnecessary manual adjustment.

👻 GHOST Item Selection Improvements

The GHOST mechanic has been updated to provide a much broader selection of items.

GHOST will now display eligible items regardless of whether the player can currently afford them.

The following remain excluded:

  • Item Crates
  • Totems
  • Crafted Items

Everything else eligible for the mechanic can now be shown, giving players the intended range of choices.

💬 Chat Behaviour Cleanup

Chat interaction has been simplified.

The chat window will no longer appear simply by hovering over it.

Instead:

  • Click the Chat button to open it.
  • Click again to close it.

This prevents the chat interface from unexpectedly appearing while players are navigating other parts of the HUD.

🌐 Steam Lobby Rejoining Improvements

A significant Steam multiplayer issue has also been addressed.

Previously, a player could successfully join a Steam lobby, leave it, and then attempt to rejoin the same existing lobby through either:

  • a Steam invitation; or
  • the Lobby Code.

In some cases, the returning player's lobby section would then appear blank and the lobby had to be recreated.

Rejoining existing Steam lobbies has been improved so returning players can properly reconnect to the existing lobby state rather than requiring everyone to start over.

This is another important step toward making Steam multiplayer sessions more resilient.

🔧 Marketplace & UI Stability

Additional work has also gone into the underlying Marketplace and Card Overlay systems, including resolving script issues affecting Marketplace UI loading and continuing to clean up interactions introduced during the recent Board Modal overhaul.

Several smaller UI and gameplay-flow corrections have also been made throughout the day as part of the v0.3.6 Alpha development pass.

What's Next?

MISFORTUNATE remains in active Alpha development, and we're continuing to focus heavily on:

Multiplayer stability • UI polish • gameplay clarity • bots • balance • localisation • reconnect/resume reliability

Every playtest continues to expose areas we can improve, and that feedback is directly helping shape the game.

If you encounter a bug, strange interaction, balancing issue, or simply have an idea for something that could work better, please continue sending it through.

Thank you for playing, testing, breaking things, and helping us build MISFORTUNATE.

See you on the board.
