Rebindable controls, Italian, and sharks can be switched off

major update

Tidewrack · published · build 25129538

Two days of feedback, one patch. Thanks to everyone who wrote in, including those who put it bluntly. Most of what follows is straight out of your posts.

New

  • Controls can be rebound. Options, Controls tab, click a binding, press the new key. Keyboard and controller are changed separately, so touching one does not cost you the other. A key that is already taken gets refused instead of stolen, so no action is left silently without a binding. Esc stays Esc. F1, F2, F3, F5 and the mouse wheel stay fixed; movement on the controller stays on the stick, otherwise walking slowly would be gone.

  • Italian as the fifteenth language. 1248 lines, done properly instead of run through a translator.

  • Sharks can be switched off. Options, the switch above the three sliders. Turning it off means giving up the "Teeth Shown" achievement, and it says so right there.

Sharks

  • The slider did nothing while you were on the raft. Two sharks at 200 percent bit exactly as often as one at 100. Fixed.

  • The bow only ever hit the front half of the animal. Now it hits all of it.

  • Sharks no longer swim through islands and no longer snap at people standing on the beach.

Handling

  • The crosshair on bright sand was not faint, it was gone. It is visible again.

  • The steering wheel visibly turns with you when you steer, and letting go no longer needs you to aim at it.

  • The sail's refusal message named the wrong thing. The sail is fixed to the raft, you trim at the rudder, and that is what it says now.

  • Move piece and repair damaged are listed in the controls overview. Both existed before, they were just written down nowhere.

  • Fire arrows are no longer fired automatically first. Right click switches, and the slot shows how many of the loaded type you have.

Fixed

  • New game really resets everything. Quick slots, achievements, cycle and difficulty used to survive it, so you started with tools you did not own and at second-cycle difficulty.

  • Being underwater below the raft no longer opens the fireplace. There was no depth limit down there, there was none at all.

  • Raiders take their boat with them when they flee instead of running across the water.

  • Gulls no longer fly at night.

  • The wake sits behind the raft instead of beside it, starts softly at the stern instead of with a hard edge in the middle, and follows the stern edge even where you built unevenly. The foam now begins wherever your last piece of wood is.

  • Standing in shallow water no longer counts as swimming. That is why you could not sprint on the beach, and why a wave washing over the deck furled your sails as if you had gone overboard.

  • The message bottle can be reeled in. The grappling hook, your hand and [E] all failed on it before.

  • The achievement descriptions still mentioned the settlers, who are no longer in the game.

What we are working on next

Several of you say the islands feel empty. Mine them, leave, that is all there is. We want you to be able to build on the islands yourselves. Too big for today, but it is the next thing we take on.

Keep the bug reports coming in the forum. They help.
