2.1.5 pre-release: HOTAS groundworks and throttle axis

Bush 1022 · published

This update mostly adds some changes to the controls.

  • Thumbsticks are no longer used for menu navigation. This is done because some HOTAS controls use the same axes and would make the game unplayable with these devices.

    • The left thumbstick can no longer be used to navigate menu buttons.

    • The right thumbstick been replaced by X and Y for scrolling.

  • Settings to invert look directions for controllers have been removed. There are now binds to look up, down, left and right. They now apply to both the chase and free cameras.

  • An option to use axis throttle has been added. When enabled, the throttle up and throttle down binds should be set by moving the HOTAS throttle lever up from the middle and down from the middle respectively.

Problems with HOTAS

While this update should make the game possible to play on HOTAS, there are still some open issues:

  • Most notably, the glyphs will remain the ones for xbox style controllers. At some point, I'll probably add the option to disable them, seeing as HOTAS devices don't adhere to a consistent interface.

  • Sometimes the game seems to treat HOTAS as an xInput gamepad, leading to key conflicts as these controllers usually have more buttons than regular gamepads. This is a deep problem that would require more time than what's planned for the current update window, and it may not be solvable at all for some devices.

Other Changes

  • The Garage and Shop menus now support controller navigation.

  • In dense fog the ground would sometimes appear sharp black, cutting through the fog. This should no longer happen.

  • Coronas can now be activated during a challenge.

Going forward

I'm going forward with the planned Cloud Saves and Sidegrades, remaining for the full v2 release. I'll leave HOTAS support at this current stage so more feedback can be gathered.
