Alchemists today are quick to dismiss the idea that they are simple brewers of potions. As lamentable as it is that this outdated notion of the alchemist’s work persists in the modern era, we cannot and should not ignore the history of the field, in particular its origins in back rooms and basements where an extensive array of tonics, elixirs, unguents, and other apothecary concoctions were first developed and, over time, perfected.
