Big Bad Pharma V1.3.1

On Steam

V1.3.1 is out on Windows and Mac.

  • On Windows it's a small one: it adds the Classic item label option below. Everything else in V1.3 came out for you on 12 October.

  • On Mac it's a big one: it brings everything from V1.3.0, plus fixes that get the game opening on every Apple Silicon Mac and the mouse behaving properly.

New in V1.3.1 (Windows and Mac)

🌱 Classic item label. A few of you missed the old way of looking at an item: its name in the big shelf-label style at the top of the screen, instead of the small tag under the crosshair. It's back as an option: Settings > Gameplay > HUD > Classic item label. Aiming at a shelf still magnifies the shelf label up there like before.

Mac

🌱 The game opens on every Apple Silicon Mac again. Some of you on M1 and M2 Macs, especially on macOS Sonoma, got "Shader platform: SF_METAL_SM5 was not cooked!" and the game closed before the menu. I'd only packed one of the two sets of graphics shaders that Macs use, and your Macs needed the other one. Both are included now. I'm sorry it took me a while, and thank you to everyone in the thread for the details.🌱 Mouse fixed on Mac. Looking around was too fast whatever you set Mouse Sensitivity to, and in the main menu the cursor could vanish or slip out of the window. The engine update I build with had changed how Macs read the mouse; I've switched it back to the normal macOS way. The sensitivity slider works properly now and the menu cursor behaves.🌱 Mac catches up with V1.3. Everything in the V1.3.0 section below is now on Mac too. Achievements and save carry-over keep working as they did in V1.2.2.1.

From V1.3.0 (new for Mac players; on Windows since 12 October)

Crashes and saves

🌱 The big crash fix. Most of the crashes since V1.2.0 were the graphics card faulting inside the shadow system. Every time the game applied your graphics settings, at shop start, on every load and even while you dragged the FOV slider, it switched virtual shadows off and on again. That rebuilt the shadows for all 12,792 items in the middle of a frame, and some GPUs fell over. It now only changes that setting when the value actually changes, so you're never rebuilding the whole shop by accident. This was my mistake from V1.2.0, and I'm sorry it took this long to track down.🌱 Loading a save no longer resets your graphics settings. A save used to carry its own copy of your settings, so loading one quietly put you back on whatever preset it was made with (usually Low). Your settings now always come from Settings. This is very likely why "changing graphics settings doesn't help" for some of you.🌱 Lighting on Low. On the Low preset the ceiling rendered almost black and the light strips didn't glow. The strips now glow, and Low gets a gentle fill on the ceiling, so it no longer looks like a power cut.

The shop

🌱 Shelves regrouped. Every OTC category now lives together on one side of a gondola instead of being split across aisles. Your existing saves are moved over automatically the first time you start V1.3 (on Mac, that's this update). Nothing is lost; any stock on a shelf that moved goes with it.🌱 A big art pass. The shop has a new look:

  • a rounded green LED pharmacy cross;

  • a pale green marble floor and light wood shelves;

  • a proper staff toilet set, plus a gumball machine, leaflet stands, a welcome mat and an open/closed sign;

  • new indoor plants, and a sunny garden outside the windows;

  • a new set of category signs, icons and colours, and a rounder, friendlier font throughout.

🌱 New staff toilet door. A proper panelled door with brass handles, a STAFF TOILET sign over it and a plaque on each side. The plant in the corner is now a peace lily that looks like a plant.

New

🌱 Wet Floor Sign (£400). A new unlock in the Rx Upgrade Hub, next to Jump and Throw. The wet floor cone by the staff toilet blocks a handy shortcut into the back room. Buy this and the cone goes away for good (for that run).🌱 Shift timelapse. When you finish a shift, press ▶ WATCH TIMELAPSE on the end screen to see the whole shift replayed from a security camera, with every item flying back onto its shelf. You can rewatch old shifts from Shift Records on the main menu.🌱 HUD options. Press H to show or hide the key hints. Settings > Gameplay has a new HUD section with a minimal HUD, HUD size and HUD opacity.

Smaller fixes

  • The end-of-shift screen has a mouse cursor again.

  • The main menu title no longer overflows.

  • The catalogue's category tabs no longer cover the book on 16:10 screens.

  • Text on the end screen sits where it should.

  • Garden plants that were floating above the hill are back on the ground.
