Castleborne Survivors 0.4.0 Major Update Announcement

On Steam

Version 0.4.0 Is Now Live

This update makes major changes to both the out-of-run flow and the combat system.

We have added an all-new Camp, bringing together upgrades, character selection, multiplayer, the Bestiary, and other features that were previously scattered across the main menu in one dedicated scene.

At the same time, Fire, Frost, and Lightning have become fully realized elemental systems. Many weapons, evolved weapons, passives, and enchantments have been redesigned around the new elemental mechanics.

An All-New Camp System

After each battle, players will now return directly to the Camp instead of the main menu.

The Camp will serve as the main hub for activities between runs. Here, you can upgrade characters and the Camp, switch characters, enter multiplayer, view the Bestiary, and adjust stage difficulty.

The previous Codex upgrade system has also been adjusted:

  • Camp Merchant Gray is now responsible for Camp upgrades

  • The Goddess Statue is used for character upgrades

  • Visit Scholar Thane to view the Bestiary

  • A Training Dummy has been added for testing weapons and combat effects

  • A new Blood Pact system and Count Lucien have been added, allowing you to adjust stage difficulty from the Camp

With these changes, we hope to make the flow outside of combat more cohesive and gradually turn the Camp into a true home base to return to after every adventure.

Introducing the Fire, Frost, and Lightning Elemental Systems

Version 0.4.0 introduces three primary elemental damage types:

Fire, Frost, and Lightning

Each element now has its own base effect. Repeatedly dealing damage of the same element to an enemy can also trigger a more powerful elemental effect.

Fire

Fire damage causes enemies to take damage over time.

Repeated Fire damage triggers Burn.

Burn causes an explosion that deals heavy damage to enemies around the target.

Frost

The Frost effect has been redesigned.

Enemies hit by Frost damage now have their movement speed reduced for a period of time.

Repeated Frost damage triggers Freeze, completely preventing the enemy from moving for a period of time.

The effect called “Frost” in the previous version now corresponds to the new “Freeze” effect.

Lightning

Enemies hit by Lightning damage have their Armor reduced for a period of time, causing them to take more damage.

Repeated Lightning damage triggers Conduction.

When Conduction is triggered, that instance of damage is also transmitted to multiple nearby enemies.

New Element Efficiency Stat

Element Efficiency further strengthens elemental combat capabilities and creates a new direction for buildcrafting.

New Passive Item: Magic Stone

Increases the Element Efficiency of all elements by a percentage.

New Weapon and Major Weapon Reworks

To support the new elemental system, we have readjusted many existing weapons and enchantments.

New Weapon

Lightning Bug

New Evolved Weapon

Overloaded Ladybug

Weapon Reworks and Adjustments

  • Magic Bolt has been reworked into Lightning Orb, which deals Lightning damage

  • Quake Boots has been reworked into Frost Stomp, which deals Frost damage

  • Lava Boots has been reworked into Frost Imp, which deals Frost damage

  • Ember Cloak, Flame Blade, Fireball, Flame Claw, and Dragon Breath now deal Fire damage

  • War Axe and Storm Axe now deal Lightning damage

  • Mage Staff and Frost Blade now deal Frost damage

  • Frostfire Twin Blades now deal both Fire and Frost damage

  • Arcane Comet now deals Fire, Frost, and Lightning damage

We have also readjusted the damage values of many related weapons to fit the new elemental system.

Other Weapon Adjustments

Shadow Cloak and Dark Imp

They can now activate in different directions based on your current movement direction.

Blood Pact System

A Blood Pact system has been added to the Camp.

Players can use Blood Pacts to further adjust stage difficulty and take on greater challenges based on their builds and character choices.

Stage and Combat Presentation Improvements

We have improved the lighting and visual presentation across every stage and during combat, while adding more dynamic details.

In addition:

  • Balance values have been readjusted across all stages

  • New BGM has been added to the Orc Arena and the Bloodsworn Arena

Graphics Settings

New options have been added to the Options menu:

  • HDR 2D toggle

  • Gamma calibration and adjustment

Players can further customize the game's visuals to suit their display and personal preferences.

About Old Save Files

Because the Camp system and character progression have been reworked, old save files will receive some adjustments upon entering version 0.4.0.

Camp Upgrades

Existing out-of-run upgrades will need to be purchased again at the Camp.

All Gold previously spent on the upgrade system will be refunded in full, allowing players to redistribute it.

Character Upgrades

Character levels will need to be upgraded again.

However, all character EXP earned in old save files will be fully preserved.

Version 0.4.0 is a major overhaul of both the out-of-run flow and the combat system

The all-new Camp makes the flow after each battle feel more complete, while the elemental system creates many new combinations among weapons, characters, and enchantments.

We will continue expanding the Camp, weapon buildcrafting, and stage content in future updates.

Thank you, as always, for supporting Castleborne Survivors.
