Paper2Galgame · public · first seen
Hi everyone, this is the Paper2Gal team.
It has been less than a month since Paper2Galgame officially launched on August 10, but honestly, it feels much longer than that.
Over the past few weeks, we have been reading feedback from Steam reviews, the community, Discord, Bilibili, and many other channels while continuously fixing bugs, reworking parts of the experience, and adding new features. Many of the updates released in August came directly from player suggestions.
If you only tried Paper2Galgame around launch, opening it again now should feel noticeably different.
Here are some of the major updates we completed this month.
Custom API support is now available again.
Players can configure compatible model services in Settings and use their own APIs or other supported models for story generation.
We have also improved several character-related features:
Adjust character position and size
Preview characters while creating or editing them
Preview character voices
Keep the currently selected character after restarting the game
Added JPG support for character images
Fixed multiple Workshop-related character display issues
Improved character resource saving and migration
Steam multiplayer was added in August.
The host can create a room and invite Steam friends to experience the story together.
Before the session starts, the game synchronizes:
Characters
Character artwork
VRM models
Voice resources
Backgrounds
The story begins once everyone has finished loading.
During multiplayer sessions:
All players can vote on story choices
The option with the most votes becomes the final choice
Ties are resolved randomly
When the host asks a question, everyone can see both the question and the answer
Voice chat is supported
Players can use emotes
Workshop emote packs are supported
Steam names and avatars are displayed
In short, you can now read papers together inside Paper2Gal.
In addition to the original story-based reading mode, Paper2Gal now includes continuous paper Q&A.
Players can ask follow-up questions about the whole paper or the current section and review previous conversations at any time.
Answers use the paper text, section structure, and extracted images as context, with the goal of staying closely grounded in the source material.
The Raise Hand feature has also been improved:
Steam players can use Raise Hand up to 30 times per day
Follow-up questions are supported
Fixed cases where custom forms of address did not work correctly
Improved grounding between answers and the original paper
A major focus in August was improving paper parsing and story generation quality.
Changes include:
Improved table of contents and section recognition
Stronger grounding between generated stories and the original paper
Reduced off-topic and unrelated story content
Improved mathematical formulas and LaTeX rendering
Improved long-document parsing
Improved generation failure handling and loading behavior
Failed story generation no longer consumes the corresponding usage count
Failed questions no longer consume usage
Paper introductions now try to explain the content step by step, covering:
Research background
Core methods
Experimental results
Main conclusions
The system can also recognize figures such as data charts and architecture diagrams and use them to support explanations during the story.
Images on the blackboard can now be clicked to view them at a larger size.
We continued improving Steam Workshop throughout August.
Players can currently share and subscribe to:
Characters
Backgrounds
Emote packs
Community language packs
We also improved character uploads, updates, resource caching, and subscription behavior, while fixing a number of Workshop-related issues.
Our long-term goal is to gradually turn the Workshop into a MOD platform for both characters and learning content.
Custom voice support now includes GPT-SoVITS v2 API compatibility.
Music now supports importing multiple MP3 files at once, and audio preview behavior has been improved so different audio sources no longer overlap unnecessarily.
Community language packs are also available.
Players can now:
Export translation templates
Create custom language packs
Import language packs
Share them through Steam Workshop
Automatically receive updates for subscribed language packs
We have also continued improving the Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, and Russian UI text.
We made several improvements to saves and loading:
Steam local saves no longer have a fixed limit
Save files can be renamed
Improved Steam Cloud synchronization
Improved migration of older saves and character resources
Save management now prioritizes lightweight summaries
Steam Cloud reconciliation now runs in the background
Added list caching
Added new loading placeholders to save management, backgrounds, Workshop, and paper loading pages
The goal is to reduce unnecessary waiting and repeated loading.
We also made a number of smaller usability and stability improvements:
Mouse wheel support for advancing and going back through dialogue
Improved movement and jumping in the parkour minigame
Fixed cases where the parkour floor failed to load
Added fullscreen mode
Press Esc to exit fullscreen
Updated the in-game cursor
Improved sharing posters and result screens
Fixed several Steam achievement issues
Fixed overlapping buttons in the character editor
Improved the first-launch experience
Fixed UI issues on the language selection page
Improved voice, vision model, and generation stability
Updated the privacy policy and terms of service pages
Most of August was focused on fixing launch issues and completing the foundation of Paper2Gal.
In September, we plan to make a more noticeable visual and interaction upgrade, along with additional updates around the back-to-school season.
Our next priorities include:
Better document parsing
More stable AI generation
Better reading and Q&A interactions
Improved character presentation
Further Workshop improvements
Overall UI and visual upgrades
Thank you to everyone who has continued sending feedback during Early Access.
Many of the features already added to the game came directly from player suggestions.
See you in September.
