Peekablock Playtest Β· build 24898308 Β· published

On SteamNotes only Β· this build shipped before we watched the app

πŸ‘‹ Hello, and welcome πŸŽ‰

If you are reading this, you are one of the first people outside our studio to play PeekaBlock. Thank you β€” genuinely. Come in, mind the wet paint.

Here is the pitch, in case you clicked "Play" before reading anything: you are a block. Hiders paint themselves, stick cubes to their own bodies, strike a pose and try to pass as furniture. Hunters walk around shooting things that look suspicious. It is hide and seek, except the hiding is arts and crafts and the seeking is trust issues.

You will get found. You will also, at some point, watch a hunter walk directly past you while you are a very convincing chair. That second thing is what the whole game is for.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Eight maps to hide in

Four brand-new ones this time:

  • PeekaHouse β€” a house. Enormous. You are small.
  • Big Kitchen β€” same energy, more cutlery.
  • PeekAttic β€” dusty, cluttered, full of things that are exactly your shape.
  • Alien β€” a farm. On a different planet. We are not going to explain further.

Joining Pirate Cove, Zoo, Battlefield and Egyptian Temple. Every map now has its own music, so you can tell where you are with your eyes closed β€” which, as a hunter, is sometimes the strategy.

Cactus Courtyard, Candy and Plaster Gallery are having a rest this round. They are not gone, just off the rotation while we focus on the new ones.

There is also a RANDOM button, which remembers what you have been playing and tries not to give you the same map five times running.

🧱 Building got a lot better

  • New shapes, including wedges β€” corners and slopes are now a thing you can actually make.
  • Ctrl+G groups cubes together, and there is copy & paste β€” so you move a whole chunk of your masterpiece at once instead of one cube at a time like some kind of medieval bricklayer.
  • Roundness per shape β€” soften individual pieces instead of the whole build.
  • Three sizes for every body shape β€” and the Tall body's biggest size now matches a hunter's height exactly. Everyone starts fresh each lobby, so you are never stuck as whatever you picked forty minutes ago.
  • The build and paint panels have been redesigned.

πŸ«₯ Hiding got better too

  • Press O to freeze yourself into a statue. Completely still, completely committed. This is the most powerful thing in the game and also the most stressful.
  • X-Ray actually works now, on U. It fades props between the camera and your own body so you can see yourself in a tight corner β€” before this build it did nothing at all.
  • Overhangs are a route now, not a dead end β€” you can transfer, traverse and pull yourself up around a lip. And if your head is blocked, your body backs off and finds a way instead of jamming. Wall tops remain excellent hiding places, and almost nobody looks up.

πŸ”« Hunting

  • You forge your own gun. A melee weapon is on the way β€” for now you will see it in the forge as MELEE (SOON), greyed out.
  • You can build and paint your own hunter body, and your own weapon β€” press G in the forge to switch between the two.
  • Shots have proper effects now that everyone can see.
  • When you get someone, they burst into debris in their own colours, which is both very satisfying and a genuinely useful tell about who you just hit.

πŸ‘» Getting caught is not the end

When you are eliminated you become a ghost β€” and your ghost is made of your own head, paint and cubes and all. Every ghost is different because every ghost is the thing you spent the round building. You fly it around and watch the rest of the match.
You can also throw things at the living. Bananas are real bananas now, not mysterious floating X shapes. We are sorry about the X shapes.

πŸ† The big reveal

Rounds now end with a proper Reveal β€” everyone gets to see where the hiders actually were, which is where you find out that the "rock" you walked past nine times was a person. Then a winner banner, then the gallery where you can look at everyone's creations and give the good ones a like.

πŸ”§ Things we fixed that you would have noticed

  • Hunters could see a glowing magenta outline around every single hider. Which, you will agree, somewhat undermines a hiding game. Gone.
  • Pulsing red boxes appeared over disguises that were completely fine, and while that was happening your build quietly stopped saving. Fixed, and it was a good one to catch.
  • Some people joined a lobby as a ghost while everyone else was a normal person, which must have been a confusing few minutes. Fixed.
  • Dead players got teleported around during the reveal. Mostly fixed β€” it can still happen when you are the one hosting, and the rest of the fix just missed this build.
  • Disconnecting no longer shuffles anyone's role around.

🚧 Rough edges β€” you found them, we know

This is an early playtest, so a few things are visibly unfinished on purpose:

  • Some shape and category buttons are greyed out. They are not broken, they are just not built yet.
  • Pirate Cove can occasionally take a long time to load. It gets there. We are still chasing it.
  • The four new maps are very new. If you fall through something, get stuck in something, or find a corner that clearly nobody has ever stood in β€” that is exactly the kind of thing we want to hear about.

πŸ’¬ Tell us things

No log files to dig up, no folders to zip, nothing technical to attach. Just:

  • Hit Report Issue in the pause menu (Esc) β€” it opens a short form, or
  • Come say hi on Discord β€” the icon is right there in the main menu.

Tell us what broke, what felt bad, and what made you laugh. That last one matters more than you would think.

🫑 One last thing

Play with friends if you can β€” this game is at its best when someone is wheezing on voice chat because they are pretending to be a lamp. Have fun out there, and thank you for helping us build this.
