Submarine Homesick Blues · build 24079646 · published
The dry dock hasn't slept since the last log, and 0.60 is easily the most ambitious thing we've dragged out of it: a whole new combat system, three-story missions full of people who will die on your watch, a companion who narrates the disaster in real time, and — at last — a submarine that actually sounds like one. It's a lot. The ocean isn't going anywhere. Neither are we. Dive in.
⭐ The big one: Combat Cards
Combat now has a full card mechanic layered on top. Yes, that means the enemy gets a hand too. Sorry.
- Playable combat cards you can fire off mid-battle to tip the odds — damage, control, defense, and assorted special effects.
- The enemy plays cards now. The AI has its own hand, chains plays on purpose, and reacts and counters based on what you do. It has been practicing.
- Two new chests — the Abyssal Chest and the Void Chest — each with its own opening animation and loot.
- Upgrade and evolve your cards: shave cooldowns or unlock extra effects to build the deck you actually want.
- Smart scaling: enemy cards adjust to sector and difficulty, so the fight keeps pace with you whether you like it or not.
- A new Combat Cards section in the tutorial — for learning all this somewhere that isn't the deep end.
🗺️ New Character Missions
Three new story arcs, each with its own characters, art, and decisions you'll quietly regret:
- Elias & Aelita: a story that threads through your whole run, with an ending that hinges on your choices.
- Draxa: you find an inert android and decide whether to rebuild it, piece by piece — and what you're willing to do to finish the job.
- Nadia, the Mother of Miasma: unlocks a new creature and a unique, evolving biological weapon. Nothing here is what it seems, and that's the generous reading.
- Security cameras in story missions: now you can watch what's happening on the other side of the hull. For better or worse.
🤖 Cortano, your onboard assistant
The old console grew a personality and a name. Cortano now rides along for the entire run, offering commentary and context whether or not you asked for either. On top of that:
- Rebuilt tutorial with interactive sandbox sections where you can practice without consequences — a rare luxury down here.
- Cleaner, lighter background animations behind each explanation.
- Richer explanations for consumables, cards, mutators, and rooms.
🔊 The submarine comes alive (Audio)
A full sound pass, bow to stern:
- Per-scene music, including dedicated tracks for the defeat screen — which you will hear — and smoother transitions.
- Sound effects for menus, events, rewards, combat, chest openings, cards, and shops.
- SFX for equipping weapons, focusing windows, and canceling actions.
- All audio normalized to one consistent, eardrum-friendly volume.
- The intro finally has its own soundtrack.
🖥️ Windows 95-core interface
- A full window manager: drag, stack, and focus windows, with title bars that light up when active — a proper retro desktop that predates most of your crew.
- Multimedia is now a resizable window with its own status bar and a classic scrollbar we lovingly refuse to modernize.
- A new photo explorer in Multimedia to revisit every moment you've captured.
- Redesigned shop in the new visual style, with fresh chest art, coin animations, and navigation that no longer fights back.
- A Credits screen, reachable from the main menu. We worked hard. Look at us.
⚔️ Balance & Combat
- Final boss retuned: phases 1 and 2 rebalanced, with a reworked armor-piercing system for fights that are fairer and easier to read. Still not easy.
- Commander Offerings: an asynchronous system around the final boss where you can leave help for other players at key moments — or receive theirs. Kindness, at scale.
- Early-game pacing adjustments and assorted combat balance tweaks.
🎮 Atmosphere & details
- City and shop backgrounds with continuous animation, because even the apocalypse deserves ambiance.
- World map with a dynamic, localized telemetry overlay.
⚡ Performance
- Optimized mutator visual effects for higher FPS with none of the pretty lost.
🌍 Localization
- Weapon, creature, and mission text reviewed and translated across all 5 languages (English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian).
- Buttons and windows with copy restored and corrected where it had wandered off.
Thanks for keeping the dive going, Commanders. Every run — and every bug report — helps us polish the submarine a little before the water gets in. See you in the next log. 🫧
